Dates use an ordinal and the month: Šodien ir 24. septembris, read divdesmit ceturtais septembris. On a date uses the locative: 24. septembrī.

How It Works

1. Today's date. Kāds šodien ir datums? (What is the date today?) Šodien ir divdesmit ceturtais septembris. Only the last part of a longer number is an ordinal: divdesmit ceturtais (24th), trīsdesmit pirmais (31st).

2. On a date. The ordinal and the month both take the locative: 24. septembrī is read divdesmit ceturtajā septembrī, and 1. janvārī is read pirmajā janvārī. The months in the locative are janvārī, februārī, martā, aprīlī, maijā, jūnijā, jūlijā, augustā, septembrī, oktobrī, novembrī, decembrī.

3. Years. A year is an ordinal too: 2025. gadā is read divi tūkstoši divdesmit piektajā gadā. A full date in words or in a letter starts with the year in the genitive: 2025. gada 24. septembrī (on 24 September 2025). In figures, the day comes first and each group ends with a full stop: 24.09.2025.

4. From and until. no 1. līdz 5. jūnijam (from 1 to 5 June). Līdz takes the dative, so it is read no pirmā līdz piektajam jūnijam.

5. Small letters. Month names are written with a small letter: septembris, not Septembris (see capital letters).

  5. Veikals būs slēgts no 1. līdz 5. jūnijam.

    The shop will be closed from 1 to 5 June.

    Read as no pirmā līdz piektajam jūnijam.

    The usual place and date at the top of a letter: year in the genitive, then the day and month in the locative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a cardinal number instead of an ordinal.

    Šodien ir divdesmit četri septembris.
    Šodien ir divdesmit ceturtais septembris.

    Dates use ordinals. Only the last part changes: četri → ceturtais.

  • Using the nominative to say on a date.

    Koncerts būs divpadsmitais oktobris.
    Koncerts būs divpadsmitajā oktobrī.

    On a date puts both the ordinal and the month in the locative.

  • Writing the month with a capital letter.

    Es piedzimu 5. Maijā.
    Es piedzimu 5. maijā.

    Latvian month names are written with a small letter.
