līdz + Dative
Until and as Far as: Līdz
Līdz with the dative marks an end point: until a time or as far as a place. Pair it with no for a range: no rīta līdz vakaram (from morning till evening).
How It Works
1. Until: an end in time.
- līdz rītam (until morning)
- līdz pirmdienai (until Monday)
- līdz sešiem (until six o'clock)
- Līdz šim viss ir labi. (So far everything is fine.)
2. As far as: an end in space.
- līdz Rīgai (as far as Riga)
- līdz jūrai (as far as the sea)
- Autobuss brauc tikai līdz centram. (The bus only goes as far as the centre.)
Līdz or uz? Uz names where you are going: Es braucu uz staciju (I am going to the station). Līdz stresses how far something goes and where it stops: līdz stacijai (as far as the station).
3. From … to. No takes the genitive and līdz takes the dative, so the two halves look different: no pirmdienas līdz piektdienai (from Monday to Friday), no Rīgas līdz Liepājai (from Riga to Liepāja). Numbers above one are plural, so both words take the dative with them: no deviņiem līdz pieciem (from nine to five).
4. Do not mix it up. Līdzi is a different word, an adverb meaning along: Nāc līdzi! (Come along!). The formal phrase līdz ar to means as a result.
