nākamais / pagājušais
Next Week and Last Year
Time words take the locative, and nākamais and pagājušais agree with them: nākamajā nedēļā (next week), pagājušajā mēnesī (last month), nākamajā pirmdienā (next Monday).
How It Works
1. From name to time phrase.
- nākamais gads → nākamajā gadā (next year)
- nākamā nedēļa → nākamajā nedēļā (next week)
- pagājušais mēnesis → pagājušajā mēnesī (last month)
- pagājusī piektdiena → pagājušajā piektdienā (last Friday)
2. Next in a series. Nākamais also means the next one in line: Nākamā pietura – Brīvības iela (Next stop: Brīvības Street). Nākamreiz means next time.
3. One-word time adverbs. šogad (this year), pērn (last year), aizpērn (the year before last), nākamgad (next year). Dictionaries also list nākamnedēļ (next week). These work like šodien and rīt.
4. How long. For a whole period, use the accusative: visu nākamo nedēļu (all next week).
5. Nākamais, not nākošais. You will hear nākošais used for next, but language advisers recommend keeping it for something that is actually coming toward you. In careful Latvian, next is nākamais: nākamajā nedēļā.

Common Mistakes
Leaving the time phrase in the nominative.

Using nākošais for next in careful Latvian.
Mēs tiksimies nākošajā nedēļā.Mēs tiksimies nākamajā nedēļā.Nākošais is common in speech, but the recommended standard keeps it for something moving toward you. For next, use nākamais.
