Definite Adjectives in Every Case

Level 3

A definite adjective stays definite in every case. Three endings do most of the work: -ajam/-ajai (to), -o (object) and -ajā (in): jaunajam draugam, lielo māju, lielajā pilsētā.

How It Works

1. Singular (masculine lielais parks, feminine lielā pilsēta):

  • Nominative: lielais parks, lielā pilsēta
  • Genitive: lielā parka, lielās pilsētas
  • Dative: lielajam parkam, lielajai pilsētai
  • Accusative: lielo parku, lielo pilsētu
  • With ar: ar lielo parku, ar lielo pilsētu (the same as the accusative)
  • Locative: lielajā parkā, lielajā pilsētā

2. Plural (lielie parki, lielās pilsētas):

  • Nominative: lielie parki, lielās pilsētas
  • Genitive: lielo parku, lielo pilsētu
  • Dative, and after ar: lielajiem parkiem, lielajām pilsētām
  • Accusative: lielos parkus, lielās pilsētas
  • Locative: lielajos parkos, lielajās pilsētās

3. Compare with the indefinite forms. Some definite forms just lengthen a vowel: liela → lielā, lielas → lielās (genitive). Others add -aj-: lielam → lielajam, lielai → lielajai, lielā → lielajā, lieliem → lielajiem. The accusative changes -u to -o: lielu → lielo.

4. Same form, two jobs. Lielo parku can be one park as an object (Es redzu lielo parku) or "of the big parks" (genitive plural). The rest of the sentence tells you which.

5. Plural after a preposition. As with other plural nouns after prepositions, use the dative plural: par jaunajiem kaimiņiem (about the new neighbours).

Examples (6)

  1. Es iedevu atslēgas jaunajam kaimiņam.

I gave the keys to the new neighbour.

    Dative masculine: jaunais → jaunajam.

  2. Mēs dzīvojam lielajā pelēkajā mājā.

We live in the big grey house.

Both adjectives take the definite locative -ajā.

  3. Vai tu redzēji melno kaķi?

Did you see the black cat?

Accusative: melnais → melno. The -o ending is the same for masculine and feminine.

  4. Viņa runāja ar jauno ārstu.

She spoke with the new doctor.

After ar in the singular, the adjective looks like the accusative: jauno.

  5. Šī ir vecās skolas fotogrāfija.

This is a photo of the old school.

Genitive feminine: vecā → vecās, matching skolas.

  6. Lielajās pilsētās dzīve ir dārga.

Life is expensive in the big cities.

    Locative plural feminine: lielajās pilsētās.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the adjective in the nominative after a preposition.

    Viņa runāja ar jaunais ārstu.
    Viņa runāja ar jauno ārstu.

The adjective changes case together with the noun: ārsts → ārstu, jaunais → jauno.

  • Using the masculine dative with a feminine noun.

    Es palīdzu jaunajam kolēģei.
    Es palīdzu jaunajai kolēģei.

Kolēģe (a female colleague) is feminine, so the dative adjective is jaunajai. Jaunajam goes with masculine nouns: jaunajam kolēģim.

  • Matching the adjective to the wrong noun, when you mean "a photo of the old school."

    Šī ir vecā skolas fotogrāfija.
    Šī ir vecās skolas fotogrāfija.

Vecā agrees with fotogrāfija and means "the old photo of the school". To describe the school, the adjective must match the genitive skolas: vecās skolas.
