līdz ar to

As a Result: Līdz Ar to

Level 5

Līdz ar to means consequently or as a result. The first part gives the cause, and līdz ar to brings in the result: Cenas pieauga, līdz ar to samazinājās pirkumu skaits. (Prices rose, and as a result the number of purchases fell.)

How It Works

1. Cause, then result. The clause before gives the cause; the clause after līdz ar to gives what followed from it:

  • Cenas pieauga, līdz ar to samazinājās pirkumu skaits. (Prices rose, and as a result the number of purchases fell.)
  • Vilciens kavējās, līdz ar to mēs nokavējām koncertu. (The train was late, and so we missed the concert.)

2. Starting a sentence. It can also open a new sentence: Uzņēmums atvēra jaunu rūpnīcu. Līdz ar to radās simts jaunu darba vietu. (The company opened a new factory. As a result, a hundred new jobs were created.)

3. Word order after it. The verb often comes right after līdz ar to, before the subject: līdz ar to samazinājās pirkumu skaits. This puts the new information, the subject, at the end.

4. The literal meaning. Līdz ar with a noun still means together with or at the same time as: Līdz ar pavasari atgriežas gājputni. (With the spring, the migrating birds return.)

Watch out: līdz alone means until (see līdz + dative), but līdz ar to never means until then. For that, say līdz tam. In everyday speech, tāpēc is the usual word for so (see tāpēc).

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the cause after līdz ar to.

Mēs palikām mājās, līdz ar to lija.
Lija, līdz ar to mēs palikām mājās.

Līdz ar to introduces the result, not the cause. The rain is the cause, so it comes first. To give the cause second, use jo: Mēs palikām mājās, jo lija.

  • Using līdz ar to for until then.

    Es gaidīšu līdz ar to.
    Es gaidīšu līdz tam.

Līdz ar to means as a result. For until then, use līdz with the dative: līdz tam.
