tātad

So: Tātad

Level 4

Tātad means so or therefore when you draw a conclusion: Tātad mēs tiekamies rīt (So we are meeting tomorrow).

How It Works

1. Drawing a conclusion. Tātad links a fact to what you work out from it:

  • Ielas ir slapjas, tātad naktī lija. (The streets are wet, so it rained in the night.)
  • Viņam nav biļetes, tātad viņš nevar iekāpt. (He has no ticket, so he cannot get on.)

2. Summing up. At the start of a sentence, tātad sums up what was said: Tātad mēs tiekamies rīt. (So we are meeting tomorrow.) As a question, it checks your conclusion: Tātad tu esi no Liepājas? (So you are from Liepāja?)

3. Commas. When tātad joins two clauses, a comma goes before it. At the start of a sentence, no comma is needed after it.

Tātad or tāpēc? Tāpēc gives a result: Līst, tāpēc es ņemu lietussargu (It is raining, so I am taking an umbrella). Tātad gives a conclusion: Ielas ir slapjas, tātad lija (The streets are wet, so it must have rained). In the first sentence the rain causes the umbrella; in the second the wet streets are only the evidence.

  2. Ielas ir slapjas, tātad naktī lija.

The streets are wet, so it rained in the night.

The wet streets are the evidence; the rain is the conclusion.

  3. Logā deg gaisma, tātad viņi ir mājās.

There is a light in the window, so they are home.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the comma before tātad between two clauses.

Ielas ir slapjas tātad naktī lija.
Ielas ir slapjas, tātad naktī lija.

When tātad joins two clauses, a comma goes before it.

  • Using tātad to give a reason.

    Es ņemu lietussargu, tātad līst.
    Es ņemu lietussargu, jo līst.

The sentence is meant to say that you are taking an umbrella because it is raining. Tātad points from evidence to a conclusion, so this sentence says: I am taking an umbrella, so it must be raining. To give the reason, use jo.
