Will Be: ero
Will be, with the same stem as was.
How It Works
| Person | Latin | English |
|---|---|---|
| I | ero | I will be |
| you | eris | you will be |
| he, she | erit | he will be |
| we | erimus | we will be |
| you all | eritis | you all will be |
| they | erunt | they will be |
Compare the imperfect erat (he was) with erit (he will be). They differ in one vowel, so read it carefully.
Sum has no -bo. Its future is the stem er- plus the present endings of a third conjugation verb: -o, -is, -it, -imus, -itis, -unt.
Erit and erunt look like erat and erant. The vowel before the last letters decides: i and u are future, and a is past.
Examples (5)

Ero is the first person future of sum.

Laetus matches Marcus, and erit is the future.

Eritis is the you all form.
- Pueri laeti erunt.

Erunt is the they form, and laeti matches pueri.
- Ego ero tecum.
I will be with you.
God says this to Moses in Exodus 3:12. Ego adds weight to I, and tecum means with you.
Common Mistakes
Adding -bo to sum.
Cras laetus erabo.Cras laetus ero.Sum has no -bo future. Its first person is ero.
Using the imperfect for something in the future.
Cras pueri laeti erant.Cras pueri laeti erunt.Cras points to tomorrow, so the verb needs the future: erunt, not erant.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Ero is the future of to be, so sum and the -bo future come first.
