〜てからというもの
Ever Since
The pattern 〜てからというもの (Ever since...) is used to emphasize that a specific event was a major turning point, leading to a continuous and dramatic change in state or behavior that persists to the present.
How It Works
1. Meaning and Nuance
〜てからというもの indicates that a specific action or event served as a catalyst for a new, ongoing state. Unlike the objective 以来(いらい), this pattern is highly subjective and emotional. It reflects the speaker's personal feelings—such as surprise, joy, or deep concern—regarding how much things have changed since that event.
2. Grammatical Structure
This pattern primarily attaches to the て形(てけい) of a verb:
- Verb (て形) + からというもの
It can also be used with demonstratives like それ(それ) or あれ(あれ) to refer back to a previously mentioned event: それからというもの (Ever since then...).
3. Usage with Time Periods
When used with nouns representing a time period, the particle から is omitted. The structure becomes [Time Period] + というもの (e.g., この一ヶ月というもの). This emphasizes that a certain state has continued throughout that entire duration, translating to "for this whole..." or "during this entire...".
4. Usage Constraints
- The second part of the sentence must describe a continuous state or a recurring habit. You cannot use it for a one-time completed action.
- Time Gap: This pattern is unsuitable for events that occurred very recently (like this morning or yesterday). Enough time must have passed to confirm the state is truly continuous and significant.
- It cannot attach directly to nouns (except for specific time periods). For example, you must say 結婚(けっこん)してからというもの rather than *結婚からというもの.
- It is a formal expression used in written language and is less common in casual daily conversation.
Examples (4)
- 日本に来てからというもの、毎日が驚きの連続だ。
Ever since I came to Japan, every day has been a series of surprises.
Word by Word: Japan to coming since, every day surprise's continuation is.
Coming to Japan is the turning point that changed the speaker's daily experience into one of constant surprise.
- 娘が生まれてからというもの、酒を一切口にしなくなった。
Ever since my daughter was born, I haven't touched a drop of alcohol.
Word by Word: Daughter was born since, alcohol at all mouth to do not became.
The birth of the daughter caused a permanent change in the speaker's habits (quitting alcohol).
- 新しい社長が就任してからというもの、社内の雰囲気はすっかり変わってしまった。
Ever since the new president took office, the atmosphere within the company has completely changed.
Word by Word: New president inauguration did since, inside company atmosphere completely changed.
The inauguration is the specific event that triggered a lasting shift in the workplace environment.
- それからというもの、彼は一度も姿を見せていない。
Ever since then, he hasn't shown his face even once.
Word by Word: That since, he one time even appearance showing is not.
Uses 'sore' to refer to a past event that resulted in the person's continuous absence.
Common Mistakes
Attaching the pattern directly to a noun.
卒業からというもの、彼に会っていない。卒業してからというもの、彼に会っていない。Unlike 以来(いらい), this pattern requires the て形(てけい) of a verb. You must use して(して) (the て形 of する(する)) after the noun 卒業(そつぎょう).
Using a one-time action in the second clause.
結婚してからというもの、指輪を買った。結婚してからというもの、毎日指輪をつけている。The second part must be a continuous state. 'Bought a ring' is a single action, whereas 'wearing a ring every day' is a continuous state.
Using the pattern for events that happened very recently.
今朝コーヒーを飲んでからというもの、ずっと元気だ。今朝コーヒーを飲んでから、ずっと元気だ。This pattern is not used for events that happened just a few hours or a day ago. It requires a significant amount of time to have passed to emphasize a long-term change in state.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand '〜てからというもの', you first need to be comfortable with the basic '〜てから' (after) structure. This pattern adds a strong emotional nuance that a significant, continuous change has occurred ever since a specific turning point. Knowledge of 'という' helps in understanding how the event is being framed as a specific period or state.
