一方で
On the Other Hand
一方で is used to show two sides of a coin. It can mean 'on the other hand' (contrast), 'while' (parallel roles), or 'at the same time' (dual qualities).
How It Works
一方で is a versatile intermediate-level connector. While often translated as 'on the other hand,' its usage is broader than the English equivalent.
1. Contrast (対比): Comparing two different subjects or situations.
Example: 'In the city it is busy, while in the countryside it is quiet.'
2. Dual Nature (並列): Describing two different qualities of the same person or thing.
Example: 'He is a strict boss, but on the other hand, he cares for his employees.'
3. Parallel Roles (同時進行): Describing two states or roles held at the same time. Note: This is used for long-term parallel situations (like having two jobs) and is not used for physical multitasking like 'eating while walking' (which requires ながら).
4. Sentence Conjunction: It can also be used at the start of a sentence (一方で、...) to contrast the previous statement with a new one.
Grammar Rules:
- Verbs: Dictionary form + 一方で (行く一方で)
- い-Adjectives: Dictionary form + 一方で (忙しい一方で)
- な-Adjectives: 〜な or 〜である + 一方で (静かな一方で / 静かである一方で)
- Nouns: 〜の or 〜である + 一方で (学生の一方で / 学生である一方で)
Unlike 反面, which only describes two sides of the same subject, 一方で can be used to compare two different subjects.
Examples (4)
- 都会の生活は便利な一方で、生活費が高い。
While city life is convenient, on the other hand, the cost of living is high.
Word by Word: City life (topic) convenient (is) while, living cost (subject) high.
Here, the pattern contrasts the positive aspect (convenience) with the negative aspect (cost) of the same subject (city life).
- 彼は俳優として活躍する一方で、慈善活動にも力を入れている。
While he is active as an actor, he is also putting effort into charity work at the same time.
Word by Word: He (topic) actor as active while, charity work also effort (object) putting in.
This demonstrates simultaneous roles. He is doing both things during the same period of his life.
- 子供が減っている一方で、高齢者の数は増え続けている。
While the number of children is decreasing, the number of elderly people continues to increase.
Word by Word: Children (subject) decreasing while, elderly people's number (topic) increasing continues.
This compares two different groups (children vs. elderly) to show a societal trend.
- 最近はオンラインで買い物をする人が増えた。一方で、実店舗の売り上げは減少している。
Recently, the number of people shopping online has increased. On the other hand, sales at physical stores are decreasing.
Word by Word: Recently (topic) online at shopping do people (subject) increased. On the other hand, physical stores' sales (topic) decreasing are.
This demonstrates the use of 一方で(いっぽうで) as a sentence-starting conjunction to contrast two separate sentences.
Common Mistakes
Confusing 一方で with 一方だ (one-way trend).
成績は下がる一方で困る。成績は下がる一方だ。一方で is a connector for two ideas. If you want to say something 'keeps on' happening in one direction (like grades dropping), you must use the sentence-ending pattern 一方だ.
Incorrectly connecting nouns without の or である.
学生一方で、社長でもある。学生の一方で、社長でもある。Nouns require the particle の or the formal copula である before 一方で.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand '一方で' (On the other hand), you need to be comfortable with noun modification, as the grammar treats '一方' (one side) as a noun being described by the preceding clause. You also need to understand the particle 'で' to mark the context of the contrast, and have a foundation in how Japanese expresses basic contrastive ideas.
- Noun Modification
The pattern '一方で' functions grammatically as a noun modification where a clause or noun phrase modifies '一方' (one side/direction).
Level 1 - でLocation of Action/means
The particle 'で' is used here to indicate the condition or circumstance under which the contrasting statement occurs.
Level 1 - が(逆接)But
Understanding basic contrastive markers is necessary to grasp the more advanced nuance of setting two sides of a situation against each other.

Related Patterns
- 反面On the Other Side
Similar to 一方で but strictly used for two opposing sides of the same subject, whereas 一方で can compare two different subjects.
Level 3 - ながらWhile Doing
Used for two physical actions performed by the same person simultaneously. 一方で is used for parallel roles or states over time rather than physical multitasking.
Level 2 - けど/けれどもBut/although
A basic contrast marker ('but'). 一方で is much more formal and structured.
Level 2 - に対してToward/regarding
Used to show a direct contrast or opposition between two things, similar to the 'contrast' function of 一方で.
