方(かた)
Way of Doing
The suffix 方(かた) turns a verb into a noun meaning 'how to' or 'the way of' doing something. It is used for both instructions and describing someone's personal style.
How It Works
1. Formation and Meaning
方(かた) is a suffix that nominalizes verbs by attaching to the ます-stem (the verb stem). It indicates the method (how to do) or the manner (the way it is done). Because it turns the verb into a noun, the resulting phrase acts as a regular noun in a sentence and takes standard particles like が, を, or は.
- Method: 漢字(かんじ)の書き方(かきかた) - How to write kanji.
- Manner: 彼(かれ)の歩き方(あるきかた) - The way he walks (his style).
2. Particle Changes
When a verb is turned into a 方(かた) noun, the particles を (object) and が (subject) generally change to の because the internal phrase becomes a noun modifier. However, the object can still take は if it is topicalized in the broader sentence (e.g., 魚(さかな)は食べ方(たべかた)がわからない - As for fish, I don't know how to eat it).
- Transitive: 魚(さかな)を食べる(たべる) → 魚の食べ方(さかなのたべかた) - How to eat fish
- Intransitive: 雨(あめ)が降る(ふる) → 雨の降り方(あめのふりかた) - How it rains / The way it rains
Additionally, particles that indicate direction, partnership, origin, or means/location like に, と, から, and で typically change to への, との, からの, and での to maintain the relationship within the noun phrase. Note that when に indicates a destination or a one-way action towards a person (e.g., 先生(せんせい)に聞く(きく)), it becomes への. For reciprocal actions, verbs can often take either に or と (e.g., 友達(ともだち)に会う(あう) / 友達(ともだち)と会う(あう)). Because Japanese does not allow the combination にの, these phrases default to using との (e.g., 友達(ともだち)との会い方(あいかた)). In everyday spoken Japanese, directional particles are very frequently dropped entirely in favor of just の.
- Example: 学校(がっこう)に行く(いく) → 学校への行き方(がっこうへのいきかた) or simply 学校の行き方(がっこうのいきかた) - How to go to school
- Example: 箸(はし)で食べる(たべる) → 箸での食べ方(はしでのたべかた) - How to eat with chopsticks
3. Noun + する Compound Verbs
For compound verbs made of a noun plus する (like 勉強(べんきょう)する or 料理(りょうり)する), you cannot attach 方(かた) to the stem of the compound verb as a whole (e.g., 勉強し方 is incorrect). Instead, you must separate the noun and the verb, using the pattern [Noun] + の + 仕方(しかた) or the equally common everyday alternative [Noun] + の + やり方(やりかた). (Note: Single-kanji or fused する-verbs like 愛(あい)する become 愛(あい)し方(かた)).
Example: 勉強(べんきょう)する → 勉強の仕方(べんきょうのしかた) / 勉強のやり方(べんきょうのやりかた) - How to study (Correct) / 勉強し方(べんきょうしかた) - (Incorrect) / 勉強方(べんきょうかた) - (Incorrect)
When the する-verb has an object, this often results in a double の pattern.
Example: 日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)する → 日本語の勉強の仕方(にほんごのべんきょうのしかた) - How to study Japanese
To avoid stacking multiple の particles, native speakers frequently use 方法(ほうほう) instead (e.g., 日本語(にほんご)の勉強方法(べんきょうほうほう)). If you want to attach a suffix directly to the noun to mean "method," you should use 〜法(ほう) instead, such as 勉強法(べんきょうほう) - study method.
4. Note on Reading and Usage
While this suffix is read as かた, the same kanji is read as ほう when comparing things (as in 方がいい) or indicating direction. Do not confuse かた (which attaches to the ます-stem) with ほう (which attaches to the plain/past form, e.g., 食べた方がいい). Furthermore, this suffix never undergoes rendaku (sequential voicing) and is always pronounced かた, not がた, which helps distinguish it from time-related words like 夕方(ゆうがた). Additionally, 方(かた) can be used as a polite noun for people (e.g., あの方(あのかた) - that person). Be careful: if 方(かた) follows a dictionary or potential form verb (e.g., 漢字(かんじ)を読める(よめる)方(かた)), it means "person who [does the action]" rather than "how to".
5. Nuance vs. 方法(ほうほう)
While 方(かた) and 方法(ほうほう) both relate to "how to do" something, they have different focuses. 方(かた) focuses on the process, manner, or physical steps of an action (e.g., the physical steps of making a cake). In contrast, 方法(ほうほう) focuses on the objective means, system, or solution to achieve a goal (e.g., the scientific method or a system for learning a language).
6. Restrictions
方(かた) cannot attach to negative or past-tense verb stems. To express "how not to do" something, you must use alternatives like 〜ない方法(ほうほう) or 〜ないようにする方法(ほうほう) (e.g., 食べない方法(たべないほうほう) - how not to eat).

Word by Word: Cooking's way of doing (subject) don't know.
For the suru-verb 料理する(りょうりする), we use the 'Noun + の + し方' pattern.
Common Mistakes
Using the particle を instead of の.
漢字を書き方を教えてください。漢字の書き方を教えてください。When using 方, the action becomes a noun. Therefore, the object of the action must be linked with the possessive particle の.
Attaching 方 directly to the noun part of a 'suru' verb.
運転方を習います。運転のし方を習います。For compound verbs like 運転する(うんてんする), you must use 'Noun + の + し方' (the way of doing the noun).
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand '方 (kata)', you first need to know how to conjugate verbs into their 'ます' stem, as this is the base the pattern attaches to. Additionally, you should understand how the particle 'の' functions, as it is used to link objects to the resulting noun phrase.
- ます形Polite Verb Ending
The pattern '方 (kata)' is attached to the stem of the verb's polite 'ます' form (e.g., 読みます -> 読み方).
Level 1 - のPossessive/nominalizer
When an object is included in the phrase (like 'how to read a book'), the object marker 'を' is replaced by the possessive particle 'の' (e.g., 本の読み方).
