untuk (topik)
Topic Framing with Untuk
Untuk + [Noun Phrase], [Comment]
This structure frames a topic by establishing a standard or category. It translates to 'As for...', 'Regarding...', or 'For the standard of...'.
How It Works
In Indonesian, placing a prepositional phrase at the start of a sentence is a common way to 'frame' the conversation. When you use untuk this way, you are telling the listener: 'Within this specific category or standard, here is my observation.'
Key Characteristics:
- Domain Limitation: It can isolate a specific topic from a larger discussion, similar to 'As for...' or 'Regarding...'.
- Literal Recipient Emphasis: Beyond abstract domains, fronting untuk is also used to emphasize a literal recipient (e.g., 'Untuk Budi, saya sudah menyiapkan hadiah' - 'For Budi, I have prepared a gift').
- Resumptive Pronouns and Subject Omission: A pronoun or suffix such as -nya is often used when the fronted topic corresponds to the object inside the comment. For example, 'Untuk masalah itu, kita bisa membahasnya nanti' (As for that problem, we can discuss it later). If the fronted topic corresponds to the subject, human subjects can use pronouns like dia, ia, or mereka. When the subject is recoverable, speakers can use zero anaphora (no pronoun, e.g., 'Untuk proposal ini, akan direvisi besok'). For a self-contained standard edited sentence, make the main-clause subject explicit rather than treating the fronted prepositional phrase as its grammatical subject. One option is to drop untuk ('Proposal ini akan direvisi besok') or introduce a subject/resumptive pronoun ('Untuk proposal ini, kita akan merevisinya besok'). No resumptive pronoun is required merely because the fronted phrase is an independent adjunct (e.g., 'Untuk Budi, saya sudah menyiapkan hadiah'). In everyday casual speech, resumptive pronouns are frequently dropped entirely.
- Standard of Comparison and Evaluation: This pattern is heavily used with adjectives when evaluating or judging something against an expectation (e.g., 'Untuk harga segini, rasanya lumayan' - 'For this price, the taste is pretty good'). It is also very frequently used with the word ukuran (size/measure) to mean 'For the standard of...'. For example, 'Untuk ukuran pemula...' (For a beginner...).
- Noun Phrase Topic vs. Purpose Clause: The basic topic-frame model here uses a noun phrase after untuk (e.g., 'Untuk proyek ini...' - 'For this project...'). A following verbal expression can introduce purpose instead (e.g., 'Untuk menyelesaikan proyek ini...' - 'In order to finish this project...'), which is a different grammatical pattern (untuk + verb). Interpret the role in context; the lexical category of the first following word alone is not a complete test of whether the phrase frames an activity or expresses a purpose.
- Punctuation and Intonation: In writing, a comma can separate a fronted Untuk [topic] frame from the main clause for clarity. A pause can separate the topic frame from the comment in speech, but actual delivery varies.
- Synonyms and Alternatives: When establishing a perspective or domain, bagi is a highly common formal synonym (e.g., 'Bagi saya...' or 'Bagi masyarakat...'). However, bagi strongly implies 'from the perspective of' or 'for the benefit/interest of' an experiencer (usually human), whereas untuk is broader and serves as the default for inanimate targets. When meaning 'Regarding' or 'As for', other formal alternatives include mengenai and tentang. Note that while 'untuk saya' (for me / as far as I am concerned) overlaps with menurut saya (in my opinion), they are not always interchangeable; this use of menurut attributes information to a source or viewpoint, rather than introducing every kind of for relation.
- Register: This is common in both formal writing and educated speech. In casual speech, speakers often use kalau alone as the most natural and common way to front a topic (e.g., 'Kalau masalah itu...'), or use 'kalau untuk...' to introduce the topic. They may also replace untuk entirely with the informal synonym buat.
Examples (6)
- Untuk ukuran anak seusianya, dia sudah sangat mandiri.
For a child of his/her age, he/she is already very independent.
Word by Word: For measure child age-his/her, he/she already very independent.
Here, 'untuk ukuran' sets the standard of comparison (children of the same age) before making the judgment.
- Untuk masalah biaya, kita bisa membicarakannya nanti.
As for the matter of costs, we can discuss it later.
Word by Word: For matter cost, we can discuss-it later.
In this case, 'untuk' frames the specific domain (costs) that the speaker wants to address. Notice the resumptive suffix '-nya' on 'membicarakannya' referring back to the fronted topic.
- Untuk Budi, saya sudah menyiapkan hadiah khusus.
For Budi, I have prepared a special gift.
Word by Word: For Budi, I already prepare gift special.
This demonstrates fronting 'untuk' to emphasize a literal recipient rather than an abstract domain.
- Untuk saat ini, kita hanya bisa menunggu keputusan mereka.
For now, we can only wait for their decision.
Word by Word: For moment this, we only can wait decision they.
The phrase 'untuk saat ini' is a very common collocation used to set a temporal frame or limitation for the statement.
- Untuk desainnya, kami akan menggunakan warna biru.
As for the design, we will use the color blue.
Word by Word: For design-its, we will use color blue.
Here, 'untuk' frames the specific aspect of the project (the design) being discussed, separated by a comma from the main clause.
- Kalau untuk dia, uang bukan segalanya.
As for him/her, money is not everything.
Word by Word: If for him/her, money not everything.
This demonstrates the casual register where 'kalau' is added to the 'untuk' frame to introduce a specific person as the topic.
Common Mistakes
Using 'adalah' immediately after the topic frame.
Untuk masalah itu adalah sangat sulit.Untuk masalah itu, situasinya sangat sulit. For the intended standalone evaluation, provide a main-clause subject: Untuk masalah itu, situasinya sangat sulit. The prepositional frame does not itself supply that subject. Simply inserting adalah after it does not repair the displayed sentence. This is the complete-clause model, not a ban on all contextually understood subjects in discourse.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use 'untuk' for topic framing, you need to understand its basic prepositional use ('for') and how Indonesian uses topic-comment structures where a noun phrase is followed by an evaluative predicate (often an adjective) without a copula.
- untukFor with Untuk
Learners must first understand the basic meaning of 'untuk' as 'for' before using it to frame a topic.
Level 1 - Adjectives can be predicates
Topic-comment structures in Indonesian often use an adjective as the comment (predicate) without a copula, which is essential for this pattern.
