-nya (objek)
Object Pronoun -nya
With an active transitive verb or an appropriate preposition, -nya can be a gender-neutral object pronoun. With a di- passive it can instead indicate the agent; other constructions use it for nominalization. Read the construction and context to identify the role.
How It Works
The suffix -nya has several established functions in Indonesian. This lesson distinguishes its object-pronoun use from its passive-agent and nominalizing uses.
1. Usage with Transitive Verbs
When you perform an action on someone or something already mentioned, you attach -nya to the active verb. In informal speech, the meN- prefix is often dropped, resulting in forms like lihatnya instead of melihatnya. Use the established verb form for the construction and register, such as melihatnya in formal active prose. Bare forms also occur in imperatives and with basic verbs; the presence of -nya does not itself impose meN- on every active verb. Makannya may also be a nominalization in another context, so identify its role before interpreting it as an object.
2. Usage in Passive Sentences
A critical function of -nya is acting as the agent in a passive sentence. It attaches directly to the verb (e.g., diambilnya - taken by him/her). If the agent is expressed after an intervening adverb in the standard model, use an independent agent phrase with oleh (e.g., diambil kemarin olehnya).
3. Usage with Prepositions
It frequently follows prepositions like untuk (for) or dengan (with). However, -nya cannot attach directly to the locative and directional prepositions di and ke (forms like *dinya or *kenya are strictly ungrammatical). Use an appropriate established preposition such as padanya, kepadanya, or di dekatnya, according to the intended relation; do not mechanically replace every di or ke phrase with pada.
4. Plurality and Respect
-nya does not express gender and can have a contextually recoverable singular or plural referent. For an explicitly plural human object, mereka is clear; it is not necessary to declare all human-group readings of -nya impossible. In ordinary reference to inanimate things, use -nya, a noun phrase, or noun reduplication where appropriate. Fiction and personification can also extend mereka beyond humans. Beliau or a title can explicitly convey respect; suitable reference depends on context, not an absolute ban on -nya.
5. Suffix Stacking
In the combinations illustrated here, -nya follows the derivational suffix. A particle such as -lah can follow -nya in a larger word. It attaches directly after the transitive suffixes -kan or -i (for example, memberikannya - to give it, or menemuinya - to meet him/her).
6. Capitalization for the Divine
According to Indonesian spelling rules, when -nya refers to God, it must be capitalized and preceded by a hyphen. For example, Kita berdoa kepada-Nya (We pray to Him).
7. Note on Other Functions
Be careful not to confuse the object pronoun with other common functions of -nya. It is frequently used as the possessive -nya ('his/her/its/their,' e.g., bukunya - his/her book) or as a definite marker ('the book'), which you will often see attached to nouns and subjects. Additionally, it is heavily used to form adverbs (e.g., biasanya - usually) and to turn adjectives into abstract nouns (e.g., mahalnya - the expensiveness, using -nya nominalized adjective). The same attached form -nya can mark the object in an active construction or the agent in a passive one; an object is not necessarily a recipient.
Examples (5)
- Saya sudah membaca buku itu dan meletakkannya di meja.
I have read that book and put it on the table.
Word by Word: I already read book that and put-it at table.
Here, -nya refers back to 'buku itu' (that book) and acts as the object of the verb 'meletakkan' (to put).
- Hadiah ini dibeli khusus untuknya.
This gift was bought specifically for him/her.
Word by Word: Gift this bought specifically for-him/her.
In this sentence, -nya is the object of the preposition 'untuk' (for).
- Kucing-kucing itu lapar, jadi saya memberinya makan.
Those cats are hungry, so I gave them food.
Word by Word: Cats those hungry, so I give-them food.
This demonstrates that -nya can be plural ('them') when referring back to non-human entities like 'kucing-kucing' (cats).
- Budi sedang sakit, saya akan menjenguknya.
Budi is sick, I will visit him.
Word by Word: Budi [progressive] sick, I will visit-him.
The suffix -nya refers to Budi, the person mentioned in the first clause.
- Nasi goreng itu sudah dimakannya.
That fried rice has been eaten by him/her.
Word by Word: Rice fried that already eaten-by-him/her.
In a passive sentence with the di- prefix, -nya can attach directly to the verb to indicate the agent (the person doing the action).
Common Mistakes
Using bound -nya as a free-standing subject pronoun.
Nya makan nasi.Dia makan nasi. This bound form cannot stand alone as Nya in this ordinary subject position. Use an independent pronoun such as dia. Attached -nya has several other functions, including possessive reference and nominalization.
Adding both -nya and a name in the ordinary single-object phrase.
Saya melihatnya Budi.Saya melihat Budi.In the ordinary single-object model, use either Budi or object -nya. A separate afterthought naming the referent can occur in speech, but it is a different information structure, not this simple object phrase.
Treating -nya after pergi as its direct object.
Saya perginya.Saya pergi.Pergi does not take a direct object in this pattern, so -nya cannot mean the person or thing gone. Perginya is nevertheless valid as a nominalization, as in Perginya naik apa? The error is the intended object reading, not every attached form perginya.
