ketidak-...-an
Negated Abstract Nouns
The ketidak-...-an pattern makes an abstract noun from a negated quality or state. English may use un-, in- or a phrase, but there is no fixed one-to-one affix translation. Forms such as ketidakadilan and ketidakpuasan occur in standard Indonesian, including news, professional and academic contexts.
How It Works
In Indonesian, while you can describe something as 'not fair' using tidak adil, you need a specific noun form to talk about the concept of 'injustice' itself. This is where ketidak-...-an is used.
1. Usage and Register
Many words in this pattern are common in formal and abstract discussion, but their use is not confined to formal settings. You will encounter it frequently in news reports, legal documents, and academic essays. In casual conversation, Indonesians usually prefer simpler phrases. For example, instead of saying ketidaksenangan (displeasure), a speaker would likely just say saya nggak suka (I don't like it).
2. Morphological Structure
The pattern attaches primarily to adjectives and stative verbs. As is standard for the ke-...-an circumfix, there are no nasalization changes to the root word. Write the complete derived noun as one word: ketidakadilan, not ke tidak adil an. In Indonesian grammar, whenever a circumfix wraps around a phrase with a space, the space is deleted.
- adil (fair) → ketidakadilan (injustice)
- pasti (certain) → ketidakpastian (uncertainty)
- puas (satisfied) → ketidakpuasan (dissatisfaction)
- hadir (present) → ketidakhadiran (absence)
- tahu (know) → ketidaktahuan (ignorance)
3. Complex Bases
This pattern can also be applied to complex bases that already contain other affixes, such as ber-, se-, or ter-. In these cases, the entire prefixed word acts as the base for the negation.
- berdaya (powerful/capable) → ketidakberdayaan (helplessness)
- seimbang (balanced) → ketidakseimbangan (imbalance)
- terbatas (limited) → ketidakterbatasan (boundlessness/infinity)
- teratur (organized) → ketidakteraturan (irregularity/disorder)
4. Constraints
The underlying phrase normally uses tidak with a quality or verbal state. Ordinary noun-identity negation uses bukan, so do not mechanically substitute it into established ketidak-...-an words. Productive word formation still depends on meaning and actual usage: a conceivable color or size contrast is not automatically forbidden, but an unfamiliar coinage needs a clear context. Learn common words first rather than assuming every not-X phrase has an equally ordinary noun.

Common Mistakes
Using the casual negator 'nggak' inside the circumfix.
kenggakadilanketidakadilanThe established standard noun is ketidakadilan, built on tidak adil. Kenggakadilan is not that standard form. Informal creative formations are a different matter; the standard spelling does not mean the noun can only be used in formal settings.
Forgetting the suffix '-an'.
ketidakadilketidakadilanThe circumfix must be complete (both 'ke-' and '-an') to function as a noun. Without the suffix, the word is incomplete.
Using 'bukan' instead of 'tidak'.
kebukanadilanketidakadilanEven though 'bukan' is used to negate nouns, this specific morphological pattern requires 'tidak' because it negates the underlying adjective before turning the whole phrase into a noun.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'ketidak-...-an', you first need to know how 'tidak' negates qualities and how the 'ke-...-an' circumfix turns roots into abstract nouns. This pattern combines those two concepts to package the 'lack of' or 'opposite of' a specific state.
- tidakNegating Verbs and Adjectives with Tidak
The 'tidak' component is the core negator used within this circumfix to indicate the absence or opposite of a quality.

This pattern is a negated variation of the standard ke-...-an abstract noun construction, sharing the same morphological structure for creating nouns from adjectives or verbs.
