Root-initial t replacement

Level 3

meN- + t (vowel) → men- (t disappears)
Example: tulis (write) → menulis

How It Works

The prefix meN- is essential for forming active verbs in formal Indonesian. When applying this prefix to roots starting with t, follow these specific rules:

1. The Standard Rule (Nasal Substitution)
If the root starts with t followed by a vowel (a, i, u, e, o), the t is deleted and the prefix becomes men-. This applies to both native words and fully absorbed loanwords.

  • tanam (to plant) → menanam
  • tulis (to write) → menulis
  • taat (to obey) → menaati

2. Exception: Monosyllabic Roots
If the root has only one syllable, the prefix changes to menge- and the t is retained.

  • tes (test) → mengetes
  • tik (type) → mengetik

3. Exception: Consonant Clusters
If the t is followed by another consonant (like 'r'), the t is retained to maintain the cluster's pronunciation.

  • traktir (to treat) → mentraktir
  • transpor (to transport) → mentranspor

4. The 'Tahu' Exception
The high-frequency root tahu (to know) does not follow the standard substitution rule. Instead of 'menahui', it becomes mengetahui.

5. Register Differences
In colloquial speech, the me- part is often dropped, but the nasalization (the n) remains. For example, menulis becomes nulis.

Examples (5)

  1. Saya sedang menulis surat untuk teman saya.

I am writing a letter for my friend.

Word by Word: I [progressive marker] write letter for friend I.

The root 'tulis' (write) starts with 't' followed by a vowel. Therefore, the 't' is replaced by 'n', resulting in 'menulis'.

  2. Ibu menanam bunga di kebun.

Mother is planting flowers in the garden.

Word by Word: Mother plant flower at garden.

The root 'tanam' (plant) becomes 'menanam' as the initial 't' is substituted with 'n'.

  3. Guru sedang mengetes kemampuan siswa.

The teacher is testing the students' ability.

Word by Word: Teacher [progressive marker] test ability student.

For the monosyllabic root 'tes', the prefix menge- is used and the 't' is retained.

  4. Ayah mentraktir kami makan malam.

    Father treated us to dinner.

Word by Word: Father treat us eat night.

In 'traktir', the 't' is followed by the consonant 'r'. Because it is a cluster, the 't' is retained: 'mentraktir'.

  5. Kita harus mengetahui kebenaran itu.

    We must know that truth.

Word by Word: We must know truth that.

The root 'tahu' (to know) is a special exception; it uses the meng- form and retains the 't' to become 'mengetahui'.

Common Mistakes

  • Retaining the 't' in native roots where it should be dropped.

    Saya sedang mentulis surat.
    Saya sedang menulis surat.

For regular roots such as tulis, the men- pattern replaces root-initial t with n. Check monosyllabic roots and established exceptions such as mengetahui rather than treating every t-plus-vowel word as regular.

  • Applying the 't' replacement rule to monosyllabic roots.

    Dia menes mobil baru itu.
    Dia mengetes mobil baru itu.

For one-syllable roots like 'tes', you must use menge- and keep the 't'.

  • Treating 'tahu' like a regular 't' root.

    Saya ingin menahui kabarnya.
    Saya ingin mengetahui kabarnya.

The root 'tahu' (to know) is irregular. It does not become 'menahui'; it becomes 'mengetahui'.

Learn This First

To understand why the initial 't' of a root disappears when prefixed with 'meN-', a learner must first understand the basic 'meN-' prefix system and the specific 'men-' allomorph that typically precedes 't' sounds.
