seharusnya
Expected Obligation with Seharusnya
Seharusnya means 'should' or 'ought to.' It describes an ideal situation, a moral obligation, or a logical expectation that might differ from reality.
How It Works
In Indonesian, seharusnya functions as a modal adverb. Unlike English, which uses 'should have' for the past, Indonesian relies on context or additional aspect markers to indicate time.
1. Moral or Social Obligation
It is used to give advice or state what is right. For example: Kamu seharusnya membantu ibumu (You should help your mother).
2. Logical Expectation
It describes what is expected to happen based on a schedule or logic. For example: Kereta seharusnya tiba sekarang (The train should arrive now).
3. Regret and Criticism
A past reference can convey regret or criticism about an unfulfilled expectation, but it can also express an inference whose fulfillment is not known. To clarify that an action was 'supposed to have already happened,' it is often paired with sudah or explicit past time markers like tadi or kemarin (e.g., Seharusnya tadi kita membaca catatan dulu - We should have read the notes first earlier). It is also frequently used to point out an unfulfilled expectation in the present (e.g., Kamu seharusnya belajar sekarang, bukan main game - You are supposed to be studying right now, not playing games).
4. Negation
To say 'should not', you can use seharusnya tidak to negate the action or state itself. Alternatively, you can use tidak seharusnya, which is commonly placed after the subject and directly before the verb (e.g., Dia tidak seharusnya menghabiskan uangnya), or before a full clause to judge the event as inappropriate.
5. Word Order Flexibility
While often placed before the verb, placing seharusnya at the very beginning of the sentence is extremely common and natural, often used for emphasis.
6. Beyond Verbs
While frequently paired with verbs, seharusnya can also modify adjectives or pronouns (e.g., Seharusnya sama - It should be the same; Seharusnya begitu - It should be like that).
7. Seharusnya vs. Sebaiknya
While both can translate to 'should,' seharusnya implies a stronger expectation or obligation in many advice contexts. The word’s derivation from harus helps explain its form but does not determine a fixed politeness level. In contrast, sebaiknya comes from the root baik (good) and is used for softer advice or suggestions.
8. Register and Synonyms
In formal writing and speech, seharusnya is the standard form. In casual conversation, Indonesians often drop the se- prefix, using harusnya instead. Additionally, semestinya and mestinya have overlapping expectation uses, with register and emphasis varying by context rather than functioning as exact substitutes for seharusnya in every sentence.
Valid Tone and Scope Contrasts: Kamu harus mencoba makanan ini can be an enthusiastic recommendation, not necessarily a bossy error. Seharusnya and sebaiknya offer other advice or expectation framings. Sudah seharusnya can emphasize that something is proper or long expected; seharusnya sudah instead clearly places already inside the expected proposition. Compare Sudah seharusnya kita menghormati orang lain with Dia seharusnya sudah pergi: the order expresses different scope, not a universal ban.
Examples (4)
- Kamu seharusnya belajar lebih giat.
You should study harder.
Word by Word: You should study more diligent.
Here, 'seharusnya' provides advice based on an ideal expectation of the student's effort.
- Seharusnya dia sudah sampai di kantor.
He should have arrived at the office by now.
Word by Word: Should he already arrive at office.
The speaker expects arrival to have happened by the reference time. The sentence alone does not establish whether the person has actually arrived.
- Kita seharusnya memesan meja kemarin.
We should have booked a table yesterday.
Word by Word: We should book table yesterday.
With kemarin, this can express regret about not booking yesterday. Without further context, seharusnya does not itself prove whether the booking occurred.
- Obat ini seharusnya diminum setelah makan.
This medicine should be taken after eating.
Word by Word: Medicine this should be-drunk after eat.
This indicates a proper procedure or instruction that ought to be followed.
