Counter-expectation with Justru

Level 4

Justru focuses a fact, often one contrary to an expectation. Depending on context, it means on the contrary, instead or precisely; not every use requires a strict opposite.

How It Works

In Indonesian, justru is an adverbial particle that functions as a focus marker. It is highly versatile and appears in both formal and informal speech.

1. Counter-Expectation
Its most common use is to introduce a statement that is the opposite of the preceding context. For example, if someone assumes you are angry, you might say you are justru happy.

2. The 'Justru Karena' Pattern
A very common construction is justru karena ('precisely because'). This emphasizes the particular reason, often one that might seem to predict a different outcome. For example: 'He succeeded precisely because he failed many times.'

3. Syntax and Placement

  • It usually precedes the word or phrase it is emphasizing (noun, verb, or adjective).
  • It can be used at the beginning of a sentence to respond to a previous statement.
  • It is often paired with bukannya to create a 'not X, but rather Y' structure.

4. Nuance vs. Malah
Malah and justru overlap in marking contrary or surprising outcomes. Malah can also reinforce an earlier point, while justru can focus the particular fact or reason at issue. Neither word automatically means that the situation is worse, and they do not form a strict scale of precision.

Context Determines the Contrast: Dia sangat kaya, bahkan dia punya pesawat pribadi adds a stronger sign of wealth. A justru version would need an appropriate contrary expectation; it is not universally ungrammatical. Likewise, sebaliknya justru can combine a discourse contrast with narrower focus, though a simple Justru dia tidak setuju may be clearer when only one contrast is intended.

Examples (4)

  1. Saya tidak membencinya, justru saya sangat mengaguminya.

I do not hate him/her; on the contrary, I admire him/her greatly.

Word by Word: I not hate-him/her, precisely I very admire-him/her.

Here, 'justru' highlights that the speaker's feeling is the polar opposite of hatred.

  2. Justru karena dia sibuk, dia bisa mengatur waktunya dengan baik.

Precisely because he/she is busy, he/she can manage his/her time well.

Word by Word: Precisely because he/she busy, he/she can manage his/her time with good.

Justru karena focuses busyness as the reason for good time management, a potentially counter-intuitive relationship.

  3. Bukannya marah, dia justru tertawa melihat kejadian itu.

Instead of being angry, he/she actually laughed on seeing that incident.

Word by Word: Instead-of angry, he/she precisely laugh see incident that.

This shows a contrast between the expected reaction (anger) and the actual reaction (laughter).

  4. Yang datang ke pesta itu justru musuhnya.

The one who came to the party was precisely his/her enemy.

Word by Word: The-one-who come to party that precisely his/her enemy.

Justru focuses the unexpected attendee: the person described as his/her enemy. The sentence does not rank every possible attendee by likelihood.
