dan
Coordination with Dan
Dan means and and coordinates words, phrases, or clauses that play parallel roles. It is used in both conversation and formal writing.
How It Works
The conjunction dan is one of the most frequent words in Indonesian. It is an invariable function word, meaning it never changes its form.
Key Usage Rules:
- Equal Rank: It coordinates elements with parallel syntactic roles, often of the same category. For example, you can connect two nouns (saya dan dia) or two independent clauses.
- Punctuation (EYD V): In a list of three or more items, a comma must be placed before dan. No list comma is needed for a simple pair of items or clauses. An inserted phrase or another independent punctuation rule can still call for a comma nearby.
- Formal Variant: In formal writing, the word serta is sometimes used as a synonym for dan, especially to avoid repetition in complex lists.
- Register: It is neutral and appropriate for both casual conversation and formal writing.
In formal writing, avoid starting a sentence with dan. Instead, use transitions like selain itu or selanjutnya. For a clear basic additive statement, place juga after the subject (e.g., Saya juga...). Fronted or context-linked uses need not follow that beginner model.
Parallel Meaning: Saya suka minum kopi dan berenang makes two activities explicitly parallel. Saya suka kopi dan berenang can coordinate two things the speaker likes; it is not automatically ungrammatical merely because one complement is a noun and the other an activity expression.

Note the comma before 'dan' in this list of three adjectives, as required by EYD V rules.
- Ibu sedang memasak dan ayah sedang membaca koran.
Mother is cooking and father is reading the newspaper.
Word by Word: Mother [progressive] cook and father [progressive] read newspaper.
No comma is needed between these two clauses in this simple coordination.

Word by Word: She can sing and dance.
Here, 'dan' connects two verbs following the modal 'bisa'.
