antara ... dan ...

Range or Relation with Antara

Level 3

The Indonesian correlative pair antara ... dan ... translates to 'between ... and ...'. It is the standard way to link two points in time, space, or abstract comparison.

How It Works

The structure antara ... dan ... is a core prepositional pair in Indonesian used in several contexts:

  • Time Ranges: To indicate an interval between two times. For example, 'between 2 and 3 PM'.
  • Physical Distance: To describe the space separating two locations.
  • Abstract Relationships: To highlight differences, similarities, or connections between two concepts (e.g., theory and practice).
  • Among Others: The fixed phrase antara lain is used to mean 'among others' or 'including' when listing examples.

In formal Indonesian (Bahasa Baku), dan is the standard partner for antara. However, in academic or legal contexts, you may encounter antara ... dengan ... in descriptions of a relationship; this variation does not inherently add reciprocity. While sampai is common in casual speech for ranges, it is considered non-standard in this specific construction.

Plurality Note: Noun reduplication can mark a group when useful, but Indonesian nouns can also have a plural reading without reduplication. Choose the noun phrase needed in context rather than automatically removing every reduplicated noun after antara.

Note the difference between antara and di antara. While antara is used for ranges and relations, di antara is used for location ('in the middle of') or to mean 'among' in a selective sense. Always remember to write di antara with a space, as di as a preposition is always separate from the following word.

Connector Choice: Perbedaan antara teori dan praktik is the recommended paired model here. Antara ... dengan ... also occurs; its register or preferred editing should be discussed as variation, not as proof that the sentence has no grammatical reading.

Examples (4)

  1. Jarak antara Jakarta dan Bandung adalah sekitar 150 kilometer.

The distance between Jakarta and Bandung is about 150 kilometers.

Word by Word: Distance between Jakarta and Bandung is about 150 kilometer.

This shows a physical range between two specific cities using the standard 'dan' connector.

  2. Ada perbedaan besar antara sistem pendidikan di sini dan di sana.

There is a big difference between the education system here and there.

Word by Word: There-is difference big between system education at here and at there.

Here, the pattern is used for an abstract comparison between two locations.

  3. Kecelakaan itu terjadi antara pukul delapan dan sembilan malam.

The accident happened between eight and nine in the evening.

Word by Word: Accident that happen between o'clock eight and nine night.

This demonstrates a time range. Note that 'dan' is used even though it refers to a span of time.

  4. Pilihlah antara warna merah dan warna biru.

Choose between the color red and the color blue.

Word by Word: Choose-[lah] between color red and color blue.

The pattern is used here to present two distinct choices.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'sampai' instead of 'dan' with 'antara'.

Antara jam dua sampai jam tiga.
Antara jam dua dan jam tiga.

For the formal paired model taught here, use antara ... dan .... Another standard range model is dari ... sampai .... Do not blend those two models in this exercise.

  • Writing 'di antara' as a single word 'diantara'.

    Dia berdiri diantara dua pohon.
Dia berdiri di antara dua pohon.

In Indonesian, the preposition di must always be written with a space before the noun or location word. This rule applies to 'di antara' as well.
