Benefactive i-...-an

An Action for a Beneficiary

Level 3

I- + gatang + -an gives igatangan, a beneficiary-oriented buying verb.

How It Works

Igatangan organizes buying around its beneficiary. In Igatanganko ni Elena ti bola, Elena is the centrally marked beneficiary, ko identifies the buyer, and ti bola supplies the purchased item. A common-noun beneficiary can appear as ti ubing. The verb does not change for the beneficiary's gender.

Compare Gatangenko ti bola para ken Elena: the ball is selected, and a separate phrase introduces the beneficiary. Both frames describe buying for Elena, but organize the participants differently. Learn the combined family rather than interpreting every i- or -an as benefactive. These elements also occur in instrument, target and location constructions. The examples illustrate contemplated buying. Learn other aspect forms from their own established verb family. A contemplated form does not make every completed or ongoing spelling predictable.
