Knowing and Understanding: amaghị, aghọtaghị
Knowing and Understanding
Know: amaara m. Understand: aghọtara m. Add -ghị to negate.
How It Works
Two verbs are worth learning with their negatives.
| Say | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Amaara m ya. | I know it. |
| Amaghị m. | I do not know. |
| Aghọtara m. | I understand. |
| Aghọtaghị m. | I do not understand. |
The first pair comes from the verb mara “know”, and the second from ghọta “understand”, a compound. Say Aghọtaghị m when a lesson is too fast, then ask Biko, kwuo ya ọzọ “Please say it again”.
