hvort sem ... eða

Whether or Not (Hvort Sem)

Level 5

Hvort sem það rignir eða ekki förum við út. (Whether or not it rains, we are going out.)

How It Works

Two options, one result. The second option is often just eða ekki (or not), but it can be any other choice:

  • Hvort sem þú kemur eða ekki ætla ég að fara. (Whether you come or not, I am going to go.)
  • Hvort sem við förum með rútu eða flugi tekur ferðin allan daginn. (Whether we go by bus or by plane, the trip takes all day.)

Word order. The whole hvort sem clause counts as the first element of the sentence, so the verb of the main clause comes next and the subject follows it: Hvort sem það rignir eða ekki förum við út. If the main clause comes first, it keeps its normal order: Við förum út hvort sem það rignir eða ekki. See verb-second word order.

The verb inside the clause. The verb after hvort sem is usually in the indicative: hvort sem það rignir. The subjunctive is also used, especially in set phrases: hvort sem þér líki það betur eða verr (whether you like it or not), where the indicative líkar is also common. The indicative is the safe everyday choice.

sama hvað and sama hvort. In speech, sama (no difference) plus a question word says no matter: Ég kem, sama hvað gerist. (I will come no matter what happens.) Við byrjum klukkan átta, sama hvort hann kemur eða ekki. Compare hvað sem and hver sem (whatever, whoever).

hvort sem er. The short phrase hvort sem er means anyway: Ég þarf hvort sem er að fara í bæinn. (I have to go into town anyway.)

Not the same as ef or plain hvort. ef (if) names one condition and cannot take eða ekki. hvort on its own asks an indirect yes/no question: Ég veit ekki hvort hann kemur. (I do not know whether he is coming.)

Examples (6)

  1. Hvort sem það rignir eða ekki förum við út.

Whether or not it rains, we are going out.

Word by Word: Whether as it rains or not go we out.

förum comes before við because the hvort sem clause fills the first place.

  2. Við förum út hvort sem það rignir eða ekki.

We are going out whether it rains or not.

Word by Word: We go out whether as it rains or not.

With the main clause first, the order is normal.

  3. Hvort sem þú kemur eða ekki ætla ég að fara.

Whether you come or not, I am going to go.

Word by Word: Whether as you come or not intend I to go.

  4. Hvort sem við förum með rútu eða flugi tekur ferðin allan daginn.

Whether we go by bus or by plane, the trip takes all day.

Word by Word: Whether as we go with bus or flight takes the-trip all the-day.

The two options can be any pair, not only eða ekki.

  5. Ég kem, sama hvað gerist.

I will come, no matter what happens.

Word by Word: I come, same what happens.

sama hvað is the everyday way to say no matter what.

  6. Ég þarf hvort sem er að fara í bæinn.

I have to go into town anyway.

Word by Word: I need whether as is to go into the-town.

hvort sem er on its own means anyway.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping subject-first order in the main clause after a fronted hvort sem clause.

Hvort sem það rignir eða ekki við förum út.
Hvort sem það rignir eða ekki förum við út.

The hvort sem clause fills the first place of the sentence, so the verb förum must come next, before the subject við.

  • Using ef for whether or not.

Ef það rignir eða ekki förum við út.
Hvort sem það rignir eða ekki förum við út.

ef (if) introduces a single condition and cannot be followed by eða ekki. To say that the result holds either way, use hvort sem ... eða.
