annaðhvort ... eða
Either ... or (Annaðhvort ... Eða)
Við förum annaðhvort í dag eða á morgun. (We are going either today or tomorrow.)
How It Works
Joining words and phrases. annaðhvort goes right before the first choice:
- Þetta er annaðhvort Jón eða Pétur. (It's either Jón or Pétur.)
- Hún býr annaðhvort í Kópavogi eða í Hafnarfirði. (She lives either in Kópavogur or in Hafnarfjörður.)
- Þú getur annaðhvort tekið strætó eða gengið. (You can either take the bus or walk.)
Joining two sentences. When annaðhvort starts the sentence, it counts as the first part, so the verb comes right after it (see the verb comes second). The sentence after eða keeps its normal order:
- Annaðhvort er hann veikur eða hann nennir ekki að koma. (Either he is ill or he can't be bothered to come.)
- Annaðhvort kemurðu með eða þú verður heima. (Either you come along or you stay home.)
One word or two? In this pair, annaðhvort is always written as one word. Written as two words, annar hvor is a pronoun that means one of the two, and it declines: Annað hvort barnanna hlýtur að hafa gert þetta. (One of the two children must have done this.) See hvor.
Related pairs. The negative partner is hvorki ... né (neither ... nor). For whether ... or, use hvort sem ... eða: Ég kem, hvort sem það rignir eða ekki. (I'm coming whether it rains or not.)
