þangað til / á meðan
Until and While
þangað til = until, á meðan = while: Bíddu þangað til ég kem (Wait until I come).
How It Works
þangað til (until).
- Bíddu þangað til ég kem. (Wait until I come.)
- Við biðum þangað til rigningin hætti. (We waited until the rain stopped.)
Not until. With a negative, Icelandic usually says ekki fyrr en (not before): Ég fer ekki fyrr en þú kemur (I won't leave until you come).
á meðan (while).
- Á meðan ég elda getur þú lagt á borð. (While I cook, you can set the table.)
- Hann hlustaði á tónlist á meðan hann vann. (He listened to music while he worked.)
On its own, á meðan means in the meantime: Þú getur beðið hér á meðan (You can wait here in the meantime).
Time, not contrast. English while can also mean whereas. In careful Icelandic, use en for that: Bílar eru með fjögur hjól en mótorhjól eru með tvö (Cars have four wheels, while motorbikes have two). Using á meðan for this is an English habit that careful writers avoid.
Word order. A fronted clause fills the first place: Á meðan ég elda getur þú lagt á borð. Compare áður en/eftir að and þegar.

Á meðan ég elda þú getur lagt á borð.Á meðan ég elda getur þú lagt á borð.The á meðan-clause takes the first place, so the main clause starts with its verb: getur þú.
Using the infinitive after geta in the main clause.
Á meðan ég elda getur þú leggja á borð.Á meðan ég elda getur þú lagt á borð.geta takes the supine: lagt, not leggja.
