For and Ago (Fyrir)

Level 2

fyrir + accusative means for: Þetta er fyrir þig. With a length of time in the dative it means ago: fyrir tveimur árum.

How It Works

fyrir + accusative: for.

  • Thanks: Takk fyrir matinn! (Thanks for the food!) — see takk.
  • For someone: Þetta er fyrir þig. (This is for you.)
  • A price: Ég borgaði fimm þúsund krónur fyrir miðann. (I paid five thousand krónur for the ticket.)

fyrir + accusative: before a point in time. fyrir hádegi (before noon), fyrir jól (before Christmas).

fyrir + dative: ago. Put the length of time in the dative:

  • fyrir tveimur árum (two years ago)
  • fyrir viku (a week ago)
  • fyrir klukkutíma (an hour ago)

Watch the number: tvö ár (two years) becomes tveimur árum in the dative.

Not "for" a length of time. English for two years is í tvö ár in Icelandic (í tvö ár / eftir viku). fyrir with a length of time in the dative means ago; it never says how long something lasted.

Place phrases. fyrir also builds fyrir framan (in front of), fyrir aftan (behind), fyrir ofan (above) and fyrir neðan (below); see prepositions of place.

Examples (6)

  1. Takk fyrir matinn!

    Thanks for the food!

Word by Word: Thanks for the food!

  2. Þetta er fyrir þig.

    This is for you.

  3. Ég flutti hingað fyrir tveimur árum.

I moved here two years ago.

Word by Word: I moved hither before two years.

tveimur árum is dative, which gives the meaning "ago".

  4. Hún hringdi fyrir klukkutíma.

    She called an hour ago.

  5. Ég borgaði fimm þúsund krónur fyrir miðann.

I paid five thousand krónur for the ticket.

  6. Komdu fyrir hádegi.

    Come before noon.

Word by Word: Come before midday.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the accusative for "ago".

Ég flutti hingað fyrir tvö ár.
Ég flutti hingað fyrir tveimur árum.

For "ago", the length of time must be in the dative: tveimur árum.

  • Using the dative after takk fyrir.

    Takk fyrir matnum.
    Takk fyrir matinn.

In the meaning "for", fyrir takes the accusative: matinn.

  • Using fyrir for "for" a length of time.

Ég bjó í Noregi fyrir tvö ár.
Ég bjó í Noregi í tvö ár.

English "for two years" (how long it lasted) is í tvö ár. fyrir does not say how long something lasted; with the dative it means "ago".
