vera að + Infinitive

Doing Something Now (Vera Að)

Level 1

To say what someone is doing right now, use vera + að + a verb: Ég er að lesa (I am reading).

How It Works

How to build it. Take the present tense of vera, add að, and then a verb in the infinitive:

  • Ég er að lesa (I am reading)
  • Þú ert að vinna (You are working)
  • Við erum að bíða (We are waiting)

Now versus in general. The plain present tense describes habits and facts: Hvað gerirðu? often means "What do you do (for a living)?". Hvað ertu að gera? asks what you are doing right now.

Not with states. vera að is for activities that are happening. It is not used with verbs that describe a state, knowledge or an opinion:

  • vita, þekkja and kunna: Ég veit það, not Ég er að vita það.
  • eiga and búa: Ég á bíl, Ég bý í Reykjavík.
  • skilja (understand): Ég skil þetta ekki. You may hear Ég er ekki að skilja þetta in casual talk, but language advice treats it as a newer usage to avoid in careful speech and writing.

Negatives and questions. Ekki goes after the form of vera: Ég er ekki að horfa. In questions þú joins it: Hvað ertu að gera? (joined forms).

Related forms. In the past, var að means "was doing". vera búinn að means "have finished doing", and fara að means "start to".

Asks about right now. Hvað gerirðu? asks about your job or habits.

    She's cooking dinner.

Word by Word: She is to cook dinner.

Common Mistakes

  • Using vera að with a verb of knowing.

    Ég er að vita það.
    Ég veit það.

vita describes a state, not an activity, so it takes the plain present: ég veit.

  • Using vera að with búa for where you live.

Ég er að búa í Reykjavík.
    Ég bý í Reykjavík.

Where you live is a state, so use the plain present of búa.

  • Leaving out að.

    Ég er lesa.
    Ég er að lesa.

The pattern always has að between vera and the second verb.
