síðan
Since and Then (Síðan)
Ég hef búið hér síðan 2020 (since 2020). Fyrst borðuðum við og síðan fórum við í bíó (and then we went to the cinema).
How It Works
síðan = since. síðan names the moment when something started. As in English, the verb is usually in the perfect (hafa + supine):
- with a year: síðan 2020
- with a time phrase, which keeps its own preposition: síðan í gær (since yesterday), síðan í janúar, síðan á mánudaginn, síðan í fyrra (since last year)
- with a clause: Ég hef lært mikið síðan ég kom hingað (I have learned a lot since I came here).
síðan needs a starting point. For a length of time, use í + accusative instead: Ég hef búið hér í tvö ár (I have lived here for two years) (see í tvö ár).
How long since? síðan also ends phrases that count back from now: Það eru tvö ár síðan ég flutti hingað (It’s been two years since I moved here). Það er langt síðan means it’s been a long time. To say ago, use fyrir + dative: Ég flutti hingað fyrir tveimur árum (I moved here two years ago).
síðan = then, afterwards. In a story, síðan tells what came next: Fyrst borðuðum við og síðan fórum við í bíó. When síðan starts the clause, the verb comes straight after it (the verb comes second): Síðan fórum við heim. In speech, svo is used the same way: og svo fórum við heim.
A look-alike. síðan can also be the noun síða (page) with the attached article: Vefsíðan er á ensku (The website is in English). The rest of the sentence shows which word it is.

síðan means then here, so the verb fórum comes right after it.

Common Mistakes
Using síðan with a length of time, as with German seit or French depuis.
Ég hef búið hér síðan tvö ár.Ég hef búið hér í tvö ár.síðan needs a starting point, such as síðan 2020. For how long something has lasted, use í + accusative: í tvö ár.
Keeping the subject before the verb after síðan meaning then.
Fyrst borðuðum við og síðan við fórum í bíó.Fyrst borðuðum við og síðan fórum við í bíó.When síðan means then and starts the clause, it takes the first place, so the verb comes next. síðan followed by subject + verb would start a since-clause instead.
