lengi / langt

A Long Time or Far (Lengi, Langt)

Level 3

lengi = a long time: Ég bjó lengi í Noregi. langt = far: Er langt til Akureyrar?

How It Works

Time: lengi. lengi says that something lasts a long time:

  • Ég bjó lengi í Noregi. (I lived in Norway for a long time.)
  • Við biðum lengi eftir strætó. (We waited a long time for the bus.)

To ask how long, say Hvað ... lengi? or Hversu lengi?: Hvað hefurðu búið lengi á Íslandi? (How long have you lived in Iceland?) (see hversu).

Distance: langt. langt says that something is far away:

  • Er langt til Akureyrar? (Is it far to Akureyri?)
  • Hún býr langt í burtu. (She lives far away.)
  • Það er ekki langt héðan. (It’s not far from here.)

Comparing. The two words share a superlative but not a comparative:

  • time: lengi, lengur, lengst: Ég get ekki beðið lengur (I can’t wait any longer).
  • distance: langt, lengra, lengst: Við gengum lengra en við ætluðum (We walked farther than we planned).

(See comparing adverbs and ekki lengur.)

Before a noun: langur. With a noun, use the adjective langur, which agrees with the noun: Þetta tók langan tíma (That took a long time), löng ferð (a long trip). You can also say í langan tíma for a long period, but lengi is shorter and very common.

A long time ago. When you count back from now, the lang- words are used: Það er langt síðan (It’s been a long time), Langt síðan síðast! (Long time no see!) and fyrir löngu (long ago) (see síðan).

Examples (6)

  1. Ég bjó lengi í Noregi.

I lived in Norway for a long time.

Word by Word: I lived long in Norway.

  2. Er langt til Akureyrar?

    Is it far to Akureyri?

Word by Word: Is far to Akureyri?

    til takes the genitive: Akureyrar.

  3. Þetta tók langan tíma.

    That took a long time.

Before a noun, use the adjective langur; tíma is masculine accusative, so langan.

  4. Hvað hefurðu búið lengi á Íslandi?

How long have you lived in Iceland?

Word by Word: What have-you lived long in Iceland?

  5. Ég get ekki beðið lengur.

    I can’t wait any longer.

lengur is the comparative of lengi.

  6. Við gengum lengra en við ætluðum.

We walked farther than we planned.

lengra is the comparative of langt.

Common Mistakes

  • Using langt (far) for a length of time.

    Ég bjó langt í Noregi.
    Ég bjó lengi í Noregi.

langt is about distance. For how long something lasts, use lengi.

  • Translating English for a long time with fyrir.

Ég hef búið hér fyrir langan tíma.
    Ég hef búið hér lengi.

fyrir does not give a length of time. Say lengi or í langan tíma. fyrir + dative points back in time instead: fyrir löngu (long ago).

  • Using lengra (farther) for time.

    Ég get ekki beðið lengra.
    Ég get ekki beðið lengur.

lengra is the comparative of langt and is about distance. For time, the comparative is lengur.
