ég vildi að

Wishes (Ég Vildi Að)

Level 4

Ég vildi að það væri sumar. (I wish it were summer.) The verb after að is in the past subjunctive.

How It Works

Wishes about now. Use ég vildi að + past subjunctive:

  • Ég vildi að ég gæti komið. (I wish I could come.)
  • Ég vildi að það væri sumar. (I wish it were summer.)
  • Ég vildi að ég ætti meiri pening. (I wish I had more money.)
  • Ég vildi að þú værir hérna. (I wish you were here.)

Wishes about the past. Use hefði + supine: Ég vildi að ég hefði vitað það fyrr. (I wish I had known that sooner.)

vildi is not past here. The form vildi looks like the past of vilja, but it expresses a wish now. It changes with the person like any verb: Hún vildi að hún gæti sungið. (She wishes she could sing.) Við vildum að við byggjum nær. (We wish we lived closer.) Only the context shows whether a sentence like this is a wish now or a report about the past.

Wanting versus wishing. Ég vil að þú komir (present vil + present subjunctive) means I want you to come: a real wish that can come true. Ég vildi að þú kæmir means I wish you would come, and it sounds less likely. A stronger form is ég vildi óska að: Ég vildi óska að ég gæti flogið. (I really wish I could fly.)

Common Mistakes

  • Using the indicative after ég vildi að.

Ég vildi að það er sumar.
Ég vildi að það væri sumar.

A wish is not a fact, so the verb after að is in the past subjunctive: væri, not er.

  • Mixing present vil with a past subjunctive.

Ég vil að það væri sumar.
Ég vildi að það væri sumar.

vil goes with the present subjunctive (Ég vil að þú komir). A wish with væri needs vildi.
