fyrir framan / á bak við
Prepositions of Place
Say where things are with phrases like fyrir framan (in front of) and á bak við (behind): Kötturinn er á bak við sófann.
How It Works
With the accusative.
- fyrir framan (in front of): Bíllinn er fyrir framan húsið.
- fyrir aftan (behind): Garðurinn er fyrir aftan húsið.
- á bak við (behind, often out of sight): Kötturinn er á bak við sófann.
- fyrir ofan (above): Myndin hangir fyrir ofan rúmið.
- fyrir neðan (below): fyrir neðan gluggann
With the dative.
- við hliðina á (next to): Bankinn er við hliðina á búðinni.
- á móti (opposite): Apótekið er á móti bankanum.
With the genitive. á milli (between): Ég sit á milli Jóns og Siggu. See prepositions with the genitive.
Which word is the preposition? Every word in the phrase is needed: fyrir framan, not just framan. In á bak við and við hliðina á, the case comes from the last word: á bak við + accusative, like við, and við hliðina á + dative, like á for location.
To ask about location, use hvar: Hvar er bankinn? — Hann er við hliðina á búðinni.
