Það er leitt að þú skulir ekki geta komið. (It's a pity you can't come.) The fact is true. skulir adds your feeling about it.

How It Works

The pattern. Feeling + að + subject + skuli + infinitive:

  • Það er leitt að þú skulir ekki geta komið. (It's a pity you can't come.)
  • Mér finnst skrítið að hann skuli segja þetta. (I find it strange that he says this.)
  • Það er gott að þú skulir vera kominn. (It's good that you're here.)

Forms. skuli agrees with the subject:

  • Present: ég skuli, þú skulir, hann skuli, við skulum, þið skulið, þeir skuli
  • Past, after a past main clause: skyldi, skyldir, skyldi, skyldum, skylduð, skyldu: Það var synd að hann skyldi fara.

Earlier events. Use hafa + supine: Það er ótrúlegt að enginn skuli hafa tekið eftir þessu.

The other way. You can also use the plain present subjunctive: Það er leitt að þú getir ekki komið. Both are correct. skuli puts a little more weight on your reaction.

Common Mistakes

  • Not making skuli agree with the subject.

    Það er leitt að þú skuli ekki geta komið.
    Það er leitt að þú skulir ekki geta komið.

    With þú the form is skulir.

  • Using a finite verb after skuli.

    Mér finnst skrítið að hann skuli segir þetta.
    Mér finnst skrítið að hann skuli segja þetta.

    skuli is followed by the infinitive segja.
