Until an Event Happens

Level 4

עד ש means until before a clause. The clause names the endpoint for an action, waiting period or state.

How It Works

An Endpoint

אני מחכה עד שתגיעי names a female addressee’s future arrival as the endpoint. The main action continues, or is relevant, up to that event. It does not automatically continue afterward.

Noun or Clause

עד הערב means until the evening and uses a noun time phrase. עד שהשיעור ייגמר uses a complete clause and keeps ש attached to its first word.

Purpose and Timing

כדי שתביני describes an aim; עד שתביני can describe how long the explanation continues. ברגע שתביני names the moment of another action in the relevant sentence. Choose the connector from the event relationship rather than treating all future subordinate clauses as interchangeable.

    We waited until the bus arrived.

    Arrival ends the waiting period.

  2. אני מחכה עד שתגיעי.

    I am waiting until you arrive.

    The endpoint is the female listener’s arrival.

  3. נישאר עד שהשיעור ייגמר.

    We will stay until the lesson ends.

    The future ending event limits the stay.

  4. היא קראה עד שנרדמה.

    She read until she fell asleep.

    Falling asleep ends the reading interval.
