כל עוד
As Long as a Situation Continues
כל עוד commonly means as long as or while a relevant situation continues. It can limit how long another action or permission applies.
How It Works
A Continuing Condition
כל עוד יש זמן, נמשיך ללמוד limits the continued study to the time available. The clause can state a condition or a continuing activity. The main situation is linked to the duration of that condition.
Duration and Endpoint
נישאר כאן כל עוד יורד גשם links staying to ongoing rain. נישאר כאן עד שהגשם ייפסק explicitly names the endpoint, when the rain stops. Both can describe a similar plan while organizing the time relation differently.
Time and Condition
כל עוד can also state a condition, as long as. These uses can overlap: a situation may remain in force while the condition continues. This lesson's examples focus on the continuing situation; the whole sentence shows what depends on it.
