-ოდე
About, With Numbers
Add -ოდე to a number to say about or up to: ათიოდე (about ten).
How It Works
-ოდე (-ode) makes a number rough. It means about, or at most that many.
| Number | With -ოდე |
|---|---|
| ორი (two) | ორიოდე (a couple, a few) |
| ათი (ten) | ათიოდე (about ten) |
| ოცი (twenty) | ოციოდე (about twenty) |
| ასი (a hundred) | ასიოდე (about a hundred) |
These numbers end in -ი and keep it, so the new word ends in -იოდე. The ი belongs to the number; the ending itself is -ოდე. It goes best with round numbers like these, and ორიოდე is very common for a few: ორიოდე დღე (a couple of days).
The noun after the number stays singular, and the verb is usually singular too: ათიოდე კაცი მოვიდა (about ten people came).
Another way to give a rough number is დაახლოებით (approximately) before it: დაახლოებით ათი კაცი. In conversation you also hear two numbers joined by a hyphen: ათი-თხუთმეტი წუთი (ten or fifteen minutes).
Examples (4)
- შეხვედრაზე ათიოდე კაცი მოვიდა.
About ten people came to the meeting.
ათიოდე is ათი with -ოდე; the noun and the verb stay singular.
- ოციოდე წუთში დავბრუნდები.
I'll be back in about twenty minutes.
ოციოდე works with -ში for time, like any number.
- ორიოდე სიტყვა მინდა ვთქვა.
I'd like to say a few words.
ორიოდე means a couple or a few.
- სოფელში ასიოდე ოჯახი ცხოვრობს.
About a hundred families live in the village.
A rough number still takes a singular noun: ოჯახი.
