No Words for A and The
Georgian has no words for a and the.
How It Works
English has to choose a or the before almost every noun. Georgian does not: კაცი მოდის means a man is coming or the man is coming, depending on what you were talking about.
| Georgian | Can mean |
|---|---|
| წიგნი | a book, the book |
| ყავა | coffee, some coffee, the coffee |
| ეს წიგნი | this book |
| ის კაცი | that man |
When you mention someone for the first time, you can use ერთი: ერთი მეგობარი მყავს თბილისში (I have a friend in Tbilisi). It is not required.
With nothing to choose, you can never get an article wrong in Georgian. When you translate into English, pick a or the from the context.
