en primeiro lugar / por último / en resumo
Structuring a Text
Order your points with en primeiro lugar (first), en segundo lugar (second) and a continuación (next). Close with por último (finally) and sum up with en resumo (in short): En resumo, o proxecto é viable.
How It Works
Opening and ordering points
- en primeiro lugar, en segundo lugar, en terceiro lugar: first, second, third. They use the ordinal numbers.
- primeiro, despois, logo: first, then, afterwards. These are simpler.
- a continuación, seguidamente: next.
Closing a list
- por último, finalmente: finally, lastly.
- para rematar, para concluír: to finish, to conclude.
Summing up
- en resumo: in short.
- en definitiva, en conclusión: all in all, in conclusion.
Punctuation
These phrases usually open the sentence and take a comma: Por último, lembrade que o prazo remata o venres.
Two traps
Galician says en primeiro lugar, with the full form primeiro before the noun, not the Spanish primer. And por fin means at last, after a wait. It is not the usual way to introduce the last point of a list; use por último or finalmente.
Examples (6)
- En primeiro lugar, quero agradecer a vosa presenza.
First of all, I want to thank you for being here.
- En segundo lugar, imos repasar o orzamento.
Second, we are going to go over the budget.
- A continuación, a directora presentará os resultados.
Next, the director will present the results.
- Por último, lembrade que o prazo remata o venres.
Finally, remember that the deadline is on Friday.
- En resumo, o proxecto é viable.
In short, the project is feasible.
- Para rematar, quero ler un poema.
To finish, I want to read a poem.
Common Mistakes
Using the Spanish short form primer.
En primer lugar, quero agradecer a vosa presenza.En primeiro lugar, quero agradecer a vosa presenza.Galician keeps the full form primeiro before a noun.
Using por fin to introduce the last point.
Por fin, lembrade que o prazo remata o venres.Por último, lembrade que o prazo remata o venres.Por fin means at last, after a wait, so here it sounds as if you are relieved to reach the last point. Introduce the last point in a list with por último or finalmente.
