Ordinal Numbers

Level 2

Ordinal numbers put things in order: primeiro, segundo, terceiro, cuarto, quinto, sexto, sétimo, oitavo, noveno, décimo. They agree with the noun like adjectives: o primeiro día, a segunda porta.

How It Works

First to tenth

  1. primeiro
  2. segundo
  3. terceiro
  4. cuarto
  5. quinto
  6. sexto
  7. sétimo
  8. oitavo
  9. noveno
  10. décimo

Agreement

Ordinals change for gender and number: o segundo andar, a segunda rúa, os primeiros días, as primeiras semanas.

No short forms

Spanish says primer and tercer before a masculine noun. Galician always uses the full form: o primeiro premio, o terceiro capítulo.

Spelling

Notice sétimo (no p), oitavo and noveno.

Writing them with figures

Add a point and a small o or a: 1.º (primeiro), 2.ª (segunda), 3.º andar.

After ten

Higher ordinals exist (undécimo or décimo primeiro, vixésimo), but in everyday speech people often use cardinal numbers instead: o capítulo doce, o século vinte e un.

Examples (6)

  1. É a primeira vez que veño a Galicia.

It is the first time I have come to Galicia.

    Vez is feminine, so primeira.

  2. Vivo no terceiro andar.

I live on the third floor.

The full form terceiro is used before a masculine noun.

  3. Colle a cuarta rúa á dereita.

Take the fourth street on the right.

  4. Quedou en segundo lugar na carreira.

She came second in the race.

Word by Word: She-stayed in second place in-the race.

  5. O meu fillo está en quinto curso.

My son is in fifth year.

  6. Os primeiros días foron difíciles.

    The first days were difficult.

    Plural masculine: primeiros.

Common Mistakes

  • Shortening primeiro before a masculine noun, as in Spanish primer.

Hoxe é o primer día de clase.
Hoxe é o primeiro día de clase.

Galician ordinals keep their full form before a noun.

  • Shortening terceiro, as in Spanish tercer.

    Vivo no tercer andar.
    Vivo no terceiro andar.

The only Galician form is terceiro.

  • Using the Spanish spelling of seventh.

Estamos no séptimo mes do ano.
Estamos no sétimo mes do ano.

    Galician writes sétimo, without p.
