Numbers 11 to 100

Level 2

After dez come once, doce, trece, catorce, quince, dezaseis, dezasete, dezaoito, dezanove. Tens are vinte, trinta, corenta, cincuenta, sesenta, setenta, oitenta, noventa, and 100 is cen. Join tens and units with e: trinta e dous.

How It Works

11 to 19

once, doce, trece, catorce, quince, dezaseis, dezasete, dezaoito, dezanove. From 16 to 19 the pattern is deza- + unit, written as one word.

The tens

vinte (20), trinta (30), corenta (40), cincuenta (50), sesenta (60), setenta (70), oitenta (80), noventa (90), cen (100).

21 to 99

Write the ten, then e, then the unit, as three separate words: vinte e tres, corenta e cinco, noventa e nove. In speech the final vowel of the ten joins the e, so vinte e tres sounds like "vintetrés", but the written form keeps the three words.

Gender agreement

Only the endings one and two change: vinte e un rapaces, vinte e unha rapazas; corenta e dous euros, corenta e dúas horas. Everything else stays the same: trinta e tres libros, trinta e tres casas.

Cen

Exactly 100 is cen: cen euros, cen persoas. Use cento in bigger numbers such as cento vinte.

Watch the Spanish look-alikes: Galician says vinte, corenta and dezaseis, not veinte, cuarenta or dieciséis.

Examples (6)

  1. Teño trinta e dous anos.

    I am thirty-two years old.

Ten + e + unit. Anos is masculine, so dous.

  2. Na clase hai vinte e unha alumnas.

There are twenty-one students in the class.

Alumnas is feminine, so vinte e unha.

  3. O concerto custa corenta e cinco euros.

    The concert costs forty-five euros.

  4. Chamei dezaseis veces e ninguén colleu o teléfono.

I called sixteen times and nobody picked up the phone.

  5. A miña avoa fai noventa anos o mes que vén.

My grandmother turns ninety next month.

  6. Viñeron máis de cen persoas á festa.

More than a hundred people came to the party.

    Exactly 100 is cen.

Common Mistakes

  • Not making un or dous agree with a feminine noun inside a bigger number.

Na sala hai vinte e dous persoas.
Na sala hai vinte e dúas persoas.

Persoas is feminine, so the number ends in dúas. The same happens with unha: vinte e unha persoas.

  • Using the Spanish form of forty.

    Teño cuarenta e cinco anos.
    Teño corenta e cinco anos.

The Galician word is corenta. Also watch vinte (not veinte) and dezaseis (not dieciséis).

  • Using cento for exactly one hundred.

    Custa cento euros.
    Custa cen euros.

Exactly 100 is cen. Cento is used in bigger numbers such as cento dez.
