Dates and Days

Level 2

Say a date as o + number + de + month: o 25 de xullo. Put o before a day for one occasion (o martes, on Tuesday) and os for a habit (os sábados, on Saturdays).

How It Works

Days of the week

luns, martes, mércores, xoves, venres, sábado, domingo. The weekday names already end in -s, so they do not change in the plural: o luns, os luns. Sábado and domingo add -s: os sábados, os domingos.

The standard also accepts an older set of names for Monday to Friday: segunda feira, terceira or terza feira, cuarta feira, quinta feira, sexta feira. You will see them in some texts, but luns to venres are the most common.

On Monday, on Mondays

No preposition is needed. Use the article: Vémonos o venres (see you on Friday), Os domingos xantamos cos avós (on Sundays we have lunch with our grandparents). A range uses de ... a: de luns a venres.

Months

xaneiro, febreiro, marzo, abril, maio, xuño, xullo, agosto, setembro, outubro, novembro, decembro. With a month alone use en: en agosto, or no mes de agosto.

Dates

Use the article + cardinal number + de + month (+ de + year): Naceu o 3 de marzo de 1998. To say today's date: Hoxe é 24 de setembro or Estamos a 24 de setembro. To ask: Que día é hoxe? or A cantos estamos?

Lowercase

Days and months are common nouns, so they take lowercase letters. Only the names of holidays take capitals: o Día das Letras Galegas é o 17 de maio.

Examples (6)

Common Mistakes

  • Using Spanish names for the days of the week.

    Vémonos o jueves.
    Vémonos o xoves.

The Galician days are luns, martes, mércores, xoves, venres, sábado and domingo.

  • Using en instead of the article before a date.

    Naceu en 3 de marzo.
    Naceu o 3 de marzo.

A full date takes the article o. Use en only with a month or year alone: en marzo, en 1998.

  • Writing months with a capital letter.

    O curso comeza o 15 de Setembro.
    O curso comeza o 15 de setembro.

Months and days are written in lowercase in Galician.
