centos / mil / millón
Hundreds and Thousands
Hundreds agree in gender: douscentos euros, duascentas persoas. Mil never changes: tres mil. Millón works like a noun and takes de: un millón de habitantes.
How It Works
100 to 199. Cen is used alone and before a noun or mil: cen euros, cen mil. Cento is used when more numbers follow: cento un libros, cento unha páxinas, cento vinte. The word e goes only between the tens and the units: cento vinte e tres. See numbers up to cen.
200 to 900. Each has a masculine and a feminine form:
- douscentos / duascentas (both parts change)
- trescentos / trescentas, catrocentos / catrocentas
- cincocentos / cincocentas, or quiñentos / quiñentas (both are standard)
- seiscentos / seiscentas, setecentos / setecentas, oitocentos / oitocentas, novecentos / novecentas
Mil. Mil never changes and needs no un in front: mil euros, dous mil, vinte mil. The hundreds before mil still agree with the noun: duascentas mil persoas. Years are read as ordinary numbers: mil novecentos oitenta e cinco (1985), dous mil vinte e seis (2026).
Millón. Millón is a masculine noun: un millón, dous millóns. Before a noun, add de: tres millóns de euros. When more numbers follow, there is no de: un millón douscentos mil habitantes. A thousand million is mil millóns.
Hundreds of, thousands of. The plural nouns centos de and miles de give a rough idea of a large number: centos de persoas (hundreds of people), miles de veces (thousands of times). For approximate numbers, see approximate quantities.
