si (réponse)
Yes to a Negative Question: Si Instead of Oui
In French, there are two ways to say 'yes': oui for positive questions, and si for negative ones.
How It Works
French uses a three-way system for basic answers:
- Oui: Yes (responding to a positive statement/question).
- Non: No (responding to any statement/question).
- Si: Yes (responding to a negative statement/question).
When someone makes a negative statement or asks a question using ne...pas, ne...jamais, or ne...plus, they are expressing a negative expectation. If you want to contradict that and say 'actually, yes,' you must use si.
Key Rules:
1. Contradiction: Use it to refute any negative statement like 'He never eats' (Il ne mange jamais) by saying 'Yes, he does!' (Si !).
2. Elision Rules: Affirmative si never elides (it never becomes s'). Note that the conditional 'si' (meaning 'if') only elides before il or ils (s'il). Therefore, Si, elle vient is always written with the 'i', whether it means 'Yes, she is coming' or 'If she comes'.
3. Moi si: To say 'I do' or 'I am' in response to a negative statement, use a disjunctive pronoun followed by si. For example: 'Je n'aime pas le café' (I don't like coffee) → 'Moi si !' (I do!).
Examples (4)
- — Tu n'as pas faim ? — Si, j'ai très faim !
— Aren't you hungry? — Yes, I'm very hungry!
Word by Word: — You not have not hunger? — Yes, I have very hunger!
The question is negative ('n'as pas'), so 'si' is used to contradict it.
- — Il ne vient pas ce soir ? — Si, il arrive à huit heures.
— Isn't he coming tonight? — Yes, he's arriving at eight o'clock.
Word by Word: — He not comes not this evening? — Yes, he arrives at eight hours.
Since the speaker asked if he 'isn't' coming, 'si' clarifies that he actually is.
- — Ce n'est pas vrai ! — Mais si, c'est la vérité.
— That's not true! — Oh yes it is, it's the truth.
Word by Word: — That not is not true! — But yes, it is the truth.
Here, 'si' contradicts a negative statement rather than a question.
- — Tu n'aimes pas le chocolat ? — Si, j'adore ça !
— Don't you like chocolate? — Yes, I love it!
Word by Word: — You not like not the chocolate? — Yes, I love that!
Using 'si' shows that the negative assumption in the question was wrong.
Common Mistakes
Using 'oui' to answer a negative question.
— Tu ne viens pas ? — Oui, je viens.— Tu ne viens pas ? — Si, je viens. In French, 'oui' is only for positive contexts. To contradict a negative question, 'si' is grammatically required.
Using 'si' to answer a positive question.
— Tu as faim ? — Si.— Tu as faim ? — Oui.If the question is positive ('Tu as faim ?'), you must use 'oui'. 'Si' only works when there is a negative 'trigger' to contradict.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use 'si' correctly, a learner must first be able to recognize and form negative statements and questions. Since 'si' specifically contradicts a negative premise, understanding the 'ne...pas' structure is essential. Additionally, familiarity with common question forms like rising intonation or 'est-ce que' provides the necessary context for when this specific type of 'yes' is required.
- ne...pasBasic Negation with Ne...pas
To understand how to contradict a negative question, one must first understand how negative statements and questions are formed using ne...pas.
Level 1 - Questions with statement word order
The pattern involves responding to questions, so understanding basic question structures is necessary.
Level 1 - est-ce queYes-no Questions with Est-ce Que
Negative questions are frequently formed using est-ce que, making it a common context for using 'si' as a contradiction.

This is a different use of the word 'si' meaning 'whether' or 'if' in reported speech.

Tag questions are another way to seek confirmation, though they don't always require 'si' unless the main statement was negative.
