ne...jamais

Never with Ne...jamais

Level 2

The pattern ne...jamais is the standard way to say 'never'. It replaces the basic ne...pas to indicate that an action happens zero times.

How It Works

1. Basic Placement
In a standard sentence, ne (or n' before a vowel) precedes the conjugated verb, and jamais follows it:

  • Je ne mange jamais de viande. (I never eat meat.)

In casual spoken French, the ne is often dropped: Je mange jamais de viande.

2. Compound Tenses
When using the passé composé, jamais is placed between the auxiliary and the past participle:

  • Il n'a jamais voyagé. (He has never traveled.)

3. Object Pronouns
If there is an object pronoun, it is placed between ne and the verb:

  • Je ne le vois jamais. (I never see him.)

4. The Article Shift
Indefinite articles (un, une, des) and partitive articles (du, de la) change to de after jamais, just like with pas de:

  • Je bois du café → Je ne bois jamais de café.

Note: This change does not happen with the verb être (e.g., Ce n'est jamais un problème).

5. Infinitives
To negate an infinitive verb, both parts stay together before the verb:

  • Il est important de ne jamais mentir. (It is important to never lie.)

6. Nuance: 'Ever' vs 'Never'
In formal questions or after superlatives, jamais can mean 'ever':

  • As-tu jamais vu Paris ? (Have you ever seen Paris? — note that déjà is more common in speech).
  • C'est le meilleur film que j'aie jamais vu. (It's the best film I've ever seen.)

7. Combining Negations
You can combine ne...plus and jamais to mean "never again":

  • Je ne fumerai plus jamais. (I will never smoke again.)

8. Short Answers
You can use Jamais ! on its own to mean "Never!" in response to a question.

Examples (5)

  1. Je ne regarde jamais la télévision.

    I never watch television.

Word by Word: I (negation) watch never the television.

A simple present tense example where 'ne' and 'jamais' surround the verb 'regarde'.

  2. Nous n'avons jamais visité Lyon.

    We have never visited Lyon.

Word by Word: We (negation) have never visited Lyon.

In the passé composé, 'jamais' comes after the auxiliary verb 'avons'.

  3. Elle ne boit jamais de soda.

    She never drinks soda.

Word by Word: She (negation) drinks never of soda.

Notice how the partitive article 'du' changes to 'de' because of the negation.

  4. N'abandonnez jamais vos rêves !

Never give up on your dreams!

Word by Word: (Negation) abandon never your dreams!

Using 'ne...jamais' with the imperative mood to give a command or advice.

  5. Il a promis de ne jamais fumer.

    He promised to never smoke.

Word by Word: He has promised of (negation) never to smoke.

When negating an infinitive (fumer), 'ne' and 'jamais' are placed together before the verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'pas' and 'jamais' together.

Je ne mange pas jamais de poisson.
Je ne mange jamais de poisson.

In French, 'jamais' replaces 'pas'. You should never use both in the same negation.

  • Incorrect placement in compound tenses.

    J'ai mangé jamais de sushi.
Je n'ai jamais mangé de sushi.

'Jamais' must follow the auxiliary verb (avoir/être), not the past participle.

  • Forgetting the article shift to 'de'.

Il ne lit jamais des livres.
Il ne lit jamais de livres.

After a negation like 'ne...jamais', 'des' normally changes to 'de': 'Il ne lit jamais de livres.' (Exceptions are rare, such as after 'être' or in a contrast.)

Learn This First

To use 'ne...jamais' (never), you must first understand the basic mechanics of French negation using 'ne...pas', as the word order is identical. Additionally, you need to be aware that negative expressions in French cause indefinite and partitive articles to change to 'de', and you must be comfortable with basic sentence structure to place the negation correctly around the verb.
