ne...pas

Basic Negation with Ne...pas

Level 1

French negation works like a sandwich: ne + [verb] + pas. In spoken French, the 'ne' is often dropped, but it is required in writing.

How It Works

Negation in French is 'discontinuous,' meaning it is split into two parts that surround the verb.

1. Simple Tenses
In the present tense, the structure is: Subject + ne + Verb + pas.

  • Je ne mange pas. (I am not eating.)

2. Elision
When the verb starts with a vowel or a mute 'h', you must use elision. Ne becomes n'.

  • Je n'aime pas. (I don't like.)

3. Object Pronouns
If there is an object pronoun, it is placed between ne and the verb.

  • Je ne le vois pas. (I do not see it.)

4. Compound Tenses
In tenses like the passé composé, the negation surrounds the auxiliary verb (avoir or être).

  • Je n'ai pas mangé. (I did not eat.)

5. Infinitives
When negating an infinitive, both parts usually stay together before the verb.

  • Il est important de ne pas fumer. (It is important not to smoke.)

6. The 'de' Rule and Exceptions
After a negation, indefinite articles (un, une, des) and partitive articles (du, de la) usually change to de. This is the pas de rule.

  • Je n'ai pas de chien. (I don't have a dog.)

Exceptions:
• With the verb être, the articles do not change: Ce n'est pas un chat.
• Definite articles (le, la, les) never change: Je ne regarde pas la télé.

Examples (6)

  1. Je ne comprends pas la question.

I do not understand the question.

Word by Word: I not understand not the question.

A standard present tense negation where 'ne' and 'pas' surround the verb 'comprends'.

  2. Elle n'habite pas à Paris.

She does not live in Paris.

Word by Word: She not lives not at Paris.

Example of elision: 'ne' becomes 'n'' because 'habite' starts with a mute 'h'.

  3. Nous n'avons pas fini nos devoirs.

We have not finished our homework.

Word by Word: We not have not finished our homework.

In compound tenses, the negation surrounds the auxiliary verb 'avons'.

  4. Je n'ai pas de voiture.

    I don't have a car.

Word by Word: I not have not of car.

Notice how the article 'une' changes to 'de' after the negation.

  5. Ce n'est pas un problème.

    It is not a problem.

Word by Word: This not is not a problem.

With the verb 'être', the indefinite article 'un' does not change to 'de'.

  6. Je ne le regarde pas.

    I am not watching it.

Word by Word: I not it watch not.

Object pronouns like 'le' are placed between 'ne' and the verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing 'pas' after the past participle in compound tenses.

    Je n'ai mangé pas.
    Je n'ai pas mangé.

In compound tenses like the passé composé, 'pas' must follow the auxiliary verb (ai), not the main action (mangé).

  • Forgetting elision before a vowel.

    Je ne aime pas.
    Je n'aime pas.

French requires 'ne' to contract to 'n'' when the following word starts with a vowel sound.

  • Using 'pas' with other negative words like 'jamais' or 'rien'.

    Je ne sais pas rien.
    Je ne sais rien.

You do not normally use 'pas' together with another negative word like 'rien' (nothing) or 'jamais' (never), apart from set phrases such as 'Ce n'est pas rien'.
