bonvolu / ĉu vi povus
Polite Requests
Three short patterns make a request polite.
How It Works
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| bonvolu + infinitive | Bonvolu sidi ĉe la tablo. |
| ĉu vi povus + infinitive | Ĉu vi povus helpi min? |
| mi ŝatus + noun | Mi ŝatus teon. |
Bonvolu is the -u form of bonvoli, so the next verb must be the infinitive: Bonvolu atendi. A second -u verb is a mistake.
The -us ending makes a request milder: Ĉu vi povus is gentler than Ĉu vi povas. Ĉu vi bonvolus paroli pli malrapide? is very polite. Mi ŝatus is a kind way to say what you want.
