-ing-
-ing-: Holder for One Thing
The root before -ing- is the one thing that sits in the holder.
How It Works
| Thing | With -ing- | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ovo | ovingo | egg cup |
| kandelo | kandelingo | candlestick |
| glavo | glavingo | sheath for a sword |
| fingro | fingringo | thimble |
The word before -ing- is normally what you put into the holder. An ovingo holds an egg, and a glavingo holds a sword.
Compare -uj-. A monujo is a container that holds money inside, and it can hold many coins. An -ing- holder is made for one thing and holds it only partly: the top of the egg stands out of the ovingo. A holder is a thing, so it takes the usual noun endings: ovingoj, ovingon.
