How Old Are You?

Level 2

Say that you have a number of years.

How It Works

SayMeaning
Kiom da jaroj vi havas? How old are you?
Mi havas tridek jarojn.I am thirty.
Ŝi havas unu jaron. She is one year old.
Mi aĝas tridek jarojn.I am thirty (another way).

Kiom da asks how many, and da joins the amount to jaroj. The answer uses havi like any other thing you have: Mi havas du fratojn. The years are what you have, so jarojn takes -n.

The number stays plain. Only the noun changes: unu jaron for one year, tridek jarojn for thirty.

The verb aĝi (to be a certain age) is another good way to say it: Mi aĝas tridek jarojn.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying that you are years.

    Mi estas tridek jaroj.
    Mi havas tridek jarojn.

Say that you have thirty years, or use aĝi: Mi aĝas tridek jarojn. Estas would say that you are the years.

  • Leaving -n off jaroj.

    Mi havas tridek jaroj.
    Mi havas tridek jarojn.

The years are what you have, so jaroj is the object and needs -n.
