-estr-
-estr-: Leader
The root before -estr- is what the leader leads.
How It Works
| Place or group | With -estr- | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| urbo | urbestro | mayor |
| lernejo | lernejestro | head teacher |
| ŝipo | ŝipestro | captain of a ship |
The word before -estr- is the place or group, and -estr- names the person who leads and decides there. On its own, estro means a leader: Elena estas la estro de nia klubo. A group of leaders who run an organization together is the estraro, and to lead is estri.
Do not confuse -estr- with -ist-. The ending -ist- names a person by a job or practice, such as kuracisto (doctor), and -estr- names the one who is in charge.
