-an-
-an-: Member or Inhabitant
-an- names someone who belongs to a place or a group.
How It Works
| Place or group | With -an- | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| urbo (city) | urbano | city dweller |
| klubo (club) | klubano | club member |
| Brazilo (Brazil) | brazilano | person from Brazil |
| Eŭropo (Europe) | eŭropano | European |
The word shows no sex, so add -in- for a woman. For the people of a country this course writes the word with a small letter, but many writers also use a capital. Both are understood.
Do not mix -an- with -ist-. A person from the place or group is an -ano, and a person who works in a field or practices something is an -isto.
