komenci / fini / daŭrigi + Infinitive
Begin, Finish, Continue
These verbs say when an action starts, ends or goes on.
How It Works
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| komenci | begin | Mi komencis lerni. |
| fini | finish | Ni finis labori. |
| daŭrigi | continue | Li daŭrigis paroli. |
All three can also take a noun: komenci la laboron, fini la libron. Daŭrigi means to keep something going. Only the first verb shows tense, and the second one stays an infinitive. The person who starts also does the action: in Ana komencis kanti, Ana sings.
Something that happens by itself, such as a congress or a film, does not komenci or fini. It uses komenciĝi and finiĝi, which are the same verbs with -iĝ-: La kongreso komenciĝis.
