از کجا استید؟

Use از for the place you come from and در for the place you are now.

How It Works

Ask where someone comes from with از کجا. A polite question is شما از کجا استید؟ A friendly one is تو از کجا استی؟

The place goes right after از, with no extra word, and the form of be closes the sentence.

To say where you are now, use در: من از کابل استم و در لندن استم (I am from Kabul and I am in London). Many Afghans live abroad, so this pair is useful to know.

    کجا asks for the place, and استید goes with شما.

  2. من از بامیان استم.

    I am from Bamyan.

    از + place + استم.

  3. او از هرات است.

    She is from Herat.

    With او the verb is است.

    We are from Kabul.

    استیم goes with ما.

  5. آن‌ها از جلال‌آباد استند.

    They are from Jalalabad.

    استند goes with آن‌ها.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out از.

    من هرات استم.
    من از هرات استم.

    از must come before the place.

  • Using در to say where you come from.

    من در هرات استم.
    من از هرات استم.

    در هرات says you are in Herat now. Use از for your home town.
