Dari and Iranian Persian

Foundations

Everyday words such as car and shop differ, and so do some sounds.

How It Works

Dari and Iranian Persian share one alphabet and most of their grammar. Their everyday words differ, so use the Dari word when you speak or write Dari.

The sounds differ too. Dari sounds و like w (وقت waqt) and keeps the long ē and ō (شیر shēr, روز rōz). Dari also keeps ق (q) and غ (gh) apart.

When you hear an Iranian word, you know it. Keep saying the Dari one.

Examples (5)

Dari says موتر for car. Iranian Persian says ماشین.

Common Mistakes

  • Using Iranian words in Dari.

    ماشین من در خیابان است.
    موتر من در سرک است.

Iranian Persian says ماشین and خیابان. Dari says موتر and سرک.

  • Building "I am doing" with دارم, as Iranian speech does.

    من دارم کتاب می‌خوانم.
    من کتاب می‌خوانم.

Dari uses the plain present, می‌خوانم. Formal writing can also say در حال خواندن استم.
